Rules Terminology

Maybe this is just a pet peeve, but I think the world -- or at least this subforum -- would be a better place if we used consistent terminology. I've been called out on being a rules lawyer for this before, but my intent was not to be a jerk. We are all on this rules subforum trying to seek clarification and greater understanding of the rules as written. To do this, we take evidence from assumed intent of the designers, in-universe continuity, grammar, terminology, and common sense.

My point is this: let's not confuse the issues at hand by introducing new terminology. Let's use the terms oultined in the rulebook.

Let's call them "attacks", not "shots."
Attacks and Actions are "performed"; Maneuvers are "executed."
The red and green numbers on ship cards are "primary weapon value" and "agility value", not attack, defense, evasion, etc.

This list is not exhaustive, and I'm not attacking anybody in particular. All I'm doing is raising a call to consistency in usage of terminology on this forum for the betterment of our community and for increased understanding of the game we love.

attack and def is so much faster to say though. Also part of the warhammer attack is = to the number of dice you have, so its going to be harder for those of us who play to get used to saying that. I agree that it should be said that way, however It will be a hard adjustment to make. Feel free to shout at me when you see me misusing words….

although we should start using slang like Eyeballs or Brights…yeah.. I totally feel like a rebel now!

I agree with you Budgernaut! I think that more consistency would make this subforum much easier to read. I have a few additions.

"Base Overlap" vs "Collision". The word Collision is never used in the rulebook.

"Bank" and "Turn" vs "soft turn" and "hard turn".

Just my 2 creds.

I agree. Though I see it more as an issue of people having trouble realizing that the vocabulary of the game and their personal vocabulary are not necessarily the same thing. The terminology of a game is its own dialect. Particularly, phrases like 'perform an action' and 'simultaneous attack' seem to give people trouble. Things would be much simpler if this were not the case.

I like it.

Just played a game with a friend of mine (He used wedge) he kept telling me to make sure I move 1 less. I explained to him three times that when Wedge reduced agility by one, it was defence dice, not movement. I can see where it gets confusing when people talk about how agile tie fighters are.
