One Satisfied Geek

By Macnme, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi,

I'm new to these boards, and new to descent. I'm not sure if this is allowed but I couldn't see any threads talking about just how awesome this game is!

This game has everything to satisfy the geek in me;

  • Fantasy Setting (grew reading Lord of the Rings)
  • Dice Battles (grew up playing Pen & Paper RPGs)
  • Playable Cards (grew up playing Magic: The Gathering)
  • Miniatures (grew up playing Warhammer Fantasy Battle)

It's a perfect blend of all of these elements that I love - it's like the delicious Rocky Road Ice-cream of boardgames.

I like that there's quite a short set-up time required, you can very quickly go from taking out the game box to starting a quest. And the short quest times mean you never get bored.

And then there's the replayability - so many combinations of Characters/Classes/Quests available!

Hooked instantly.

I don't think anyone at FFG will object to you singing the praises of their products. I'm glad you're enjoying Descent. =)

As a long time Descent player since the launch of first edition, I sometimes found myself jaded about the way the game played. I still enjoyed it, but the flaws often overshadowed the gems. 2E is definitely a breath of fresh air for the game line, and I think they made a lot of really good choices as far as what they changed up and what they kept the same.

Being familiar with the old system, I can already see a few chinks in the mechanics of 2E, but overall I'm also very excited about the new edition of the game. The simpler, cleaner base mechanics also make it easier to add house rules to suit personal tastes, I think, so all in all I believe Descent 2E will be a classic in its own time. =)

Even besides the fact that I just bought the conversion kit and now sit on 40 hero cards noone wants to play since they dont have the resembling miniature it is still an awesome game and brought back the joy of gaming to an old, desillusioned digital game designer such as myself.
