By Xploiter, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Alright folks, Ive been working on this for a while now. This is a simplified FAQ. I went ahead an compiled every question about rules on the forum I could find (except one or two questions that were extremely easy if you had a rulebook…) The purpose behind this thread is to help you if a conflict arises.

If you desire more information on a ruling, or wish to challenge a ruling on here, then there is a link on your selected question for you to do so. This will help keep the forums organized.

These are not official answers, however these are our best guesses at what ffg would rule. This thread is not to argue about a ruling, but you should post about how to make a ruling more clear, post a question that was asked that isnt on here (include a link if you wouldnt mind), or just simply to talk about how nice this looks. Once an official FAQ is posted, this thread shall be updated to add questions that is not addressed in the offical FAQ.

Edit: Due to some hot topics, Ive decided to write a color so you will know which rulings to take salt to.

Green= Majority feels as if this ruling is correct

Yellow= Could go either direction, please check the thread to get your own ruling

Red= Majority feels as if this ruling is wrong.

Critical hits:

If a pilot has received a Blinded Pilot Card, does he have to be able to fire at an opponent before turning the card upside down? Yes. You must perform a legitimate shot to remove the effects of this card. Green.

Does Detirementation only ignore cards with the word Pilot on them? Yes. You receive no damage at all when you receive a faceup Pilot damage. Green.

Can an ion cannon do a critical hit? No.Yellow.

Does an R2 astromech droid cancel out a damaged engine card? No. The damage card over rules the astromech. Yellow.

Can “Night Beast” still receive his free focus if he received a damaged sensor? No. He may not as the card prohibits "actions listed in your action bar". Green.

Does a pilot who has received a Stunned Pilot card receive damage when his movement marker falls over another ship? No, unless the movement marker would have you stop overlapping the Pilot. Green.

If a card says “Action:” do you have to take an action to remove the effects of this card?
Yes. You still have a damage, however you no longer suffer the effects of the damage card. Green.

Actions, and Primary Weapons:

Can Darth Vader use barrel roll, then use expert handling to barrel roll again? No. A ship cannot perform the same action twice. Yellow.

Can a ship have both an evade or a focus? Yes, only if given as a result of an upgrade or pilot ability. “Night beast” for example may perform a green move and receive a focus for free, and use an action to evade, or barrel roll if he chooses to. Green.

Can a pilot save his target lock and use it in subsequent rounds of combat? Yes, as long as he doesn’t make another target lock. Green

Can you use a target lock while stressed? Yes. You may not aquire a target lock while stressed though. Green.

Can you barrel roll after a move that would run you into another ship to avoid running into the ship? No. Green.

Is barrel roll an action? Yes. Green.

If Darth Vader is under stress can he still take an action? No. No actions can be taken if you are stressed. Green.

Can you shoot someone who isn’t in your firing arc or out of your range if you have a target lock on them? No. Green.

Secondary Weapons and Upgrades:

When a Pilot uses a secondary weapon, does he get range bonuses? No. Only primary weapons get range benefits. The Defender likewise does not receive an extra evade die for being at range three. Green.

Does shooting a secondary weapon through an asteroid give the defender an extra evade die? Yes. Green.

Can you use a target lock to reroll dice on a secondary weapon? Yes, however if the secondary weapon requires a lock to be used, then you may not reroll. (The Ion Cannon is the only thing so far that will allow you to do that.) Green.

Can swarm tactics be used on another pilot using swarm tactics to give all three pilots the same initiative as the first pilot? Yes. If the first pilot has a 9 initiative and uses his swarm tactics on a pilot with 8 initiative, who uses it on a pilot with 4 initiative, they all will have 9 initiative. Green.

Can you use use two proton torpedoes at the same time from one ship? No. you may only use one per attack. Green.

Can a pilot use cluster missiles and attack only once and avoid discarding it? No. Green

Are Pilots who have special abilities that don’t specify Primary attacks able to use their abilities for secondary attacks? Yes. Green.

Does your secondary weapon need to be within your firing arc? Yes, unless specified it doesn’t. Green.

Can you Fire your secondary weapon while stressed? Yes. Green.

When you use Cluster Missiles with focus, do you get the ability to focus for both shots? No, you must choose either the first shot group, or the second. Green.

When you use Cluster missile with Marksmenship, do you get to use for only one of the shots? No. You get it for both, however you may only turn one focus into a crit. Yellow.

Can an upgrade with a bullet infront of its name be used more then once? Yes. You can only have one per side though. Green.

Other questions that dont fit other places:

If two hits and a crit is rolled on the attack dice, and two evades on the evade dice, will the dice cancel the regular hits first? Yes. All regular hits get evaded before critical hits are evaded. Green.

Can Garven Dreis give a focus, or dutch a target lock, to another pilot who is stressed? No. This is not considered an action for the stressed pilot. Yellow. -most recent debates makes this answer controversial

Does Dutch Vander give his ability to another pilot after Dutch moves but before the pilot? Yes. As long as your following initiative correctly. Green.

If a Pilot is stressed and preforms a green move, however ends his turn overlapping another model does he remove his stress? Yes. It is still treated as a green movement for the purpose of removing stress or activating certain pilot abilities or upgrades. Green.

Can garven give his abilitity to someone who already has a focus? No. You may not give a focus token on him. Yellow-most recent debates makes this answer controversial

If a move takes your movement template off the board edge, however your ship is able to be completely inside the board, is it consider to flee? Yes, you must remove it from the game. Yellow.

Does Howlrunners ability mean you have to be within one range of an Enemy to get a reroll?
No. It must be used within 1 range of Howlrunner. Green.

Can Howlrunners ability be used for more then one pilot?
Yes. Yellow.

More to come as more people ask questions…

If your question isnt on here, then you should create a topic about it so the forum can help you out with a ruling on it. if your still stumped, click the link at the bottom of the forums in gray that says "rules questions"

The "Barrel Roll"/"Expert Handling" and "Cluster Missile"/"Marksmanship" questions are controversial.

You are just wrong about the Gavin question. It isn't controversial and the consensus is that he can give a focus token to someone who already has one.

Otherwise, your compilation was acceptable.

I went with what I thought was right. Ill post in that thread my reason for gavin. The other two questions, I will admit are hard to say, but I went with a solid answer with them. Thanks for your input though

I agree with ShadowJak. All of these are controversial and the Garven Dries questions is just wrong. Please don't mislead people by giving an answer when there is not a clear answer to give.

Ziggy, your my new favorite person to argue with. Davey has allot of weight on his shoulders, and his thoughts went with my own. Ive edited the list to show the topics with a difference of opinion however. Does this seem like a fair way to keep the rules?

I think it's a fair way to summarize until we get a FAQ. I also think you should reread the thread you referenced, because Daveydavedave clearly sides with the interpretation that if a ship ends its movement completely on the board it is not considered fleeing.

Not to get critical here, but putting together a FAQ based on consensus only to overrule that consensus based on your feelings is kind of wack. You defeat the purpose of the FAQ. I now question the validity of the rest of the FAQ.

You should stick to the consensus or simply admit that the entire thing is just your opinion at that point.

There would be no need for a 'red' ruling as you shouldn't be listing that answer as it's not the consensus.

Great idea, poorly implimented.

I also disagree with this interpretation. It seem s the consensus in the referenced thread is that if the ship ENDS movement completely on the board there is no problem.

I reserve the right to be mistaken.

Thanks Ziggy! I can't believe I missed that one. Here it is straight from page 17 of the rule book. "If a ship executes a maneuver that causes any part of its base to go outside the play area (beyond any edge), then that ship has fled the battlefield. Unless specified by a mission overview, ships that flee the battlefield are immediately destroyed." It is very clear that as long as the whole ship base is completely on the board, the ship has not fled. Another example of a poorly written FAQ.

I think the Gavin question is definitely leaning more toward you can have more than one focus token and not the other way around as stated. I think you have worded it is very confusing. You say the ruling is no but that most people disagree (that means the ruling is yes to me). Anyway, this one in particular is very confusing as worded/presented.

Xploiter, if you're planning to attend the FFG Championship Weekend in November, you should present the FAQs that are currently up to "the powers that be". See what they have to say about making it "official" (no offense).
Love the FAQs, btw.

It seems you have double standards as it comes to Garven and Dutch, I suggest you take a look at that. Other then that, fabulous job with the FAQ. Im glad someone took my advice about how it would look better as actual questions then giving vague references to rules in question. I agree with the said statement above though. Maybe not so much as making it official, but the way you have presented it makes it very readible and able to print and ask them. I wish this were in Pittsburg so I could find out for myself what the rulings are.

Hey, I want to say that my criticism of one of your points does not negate the others - I think you have done a great job of summarizing the majority of questions that the community has. This is a good resource as long as it is understood that it is basically consensus and opinion until there are official rulings from FFG in the form of a FAQ/errata document, hopefully before the world Championships in November!

I reserve the right to be mistaken.

I think if the question were rephrased to say "only once" instead of "more then [sic] once", we'd have consensus. As it's worded, the ruling is backwards.

There are a lot of these that should be worded differently.

Oh, I see. Somehow I missed the part about "one per side" the first time I read it. Never mind then, it's fine.

thanks for the comments! due to arguements, I have been swayed to change my opinion about Dutch and will change this thread to reflect that. Also due to most recent arguments which I have had been able to sit back and watch, I am going to change the color of Gavin.

I will not be going to FFG. I would like to, however my job and house tell me this is a bad idea. I would be thrilled if someone would take this list to FFG staff and report back on it. (maybe even multiple people (encase different people come back with different results, or someone cant make it)

Also thank you's are in order to those who complimented this thread and the work involved. I aim to make this thread be a guide before people post, and also to try to be as accurate as I can with what FFG intended the rules to be. I applaud Torresse for pointing out my double standards with allowing Gavin and Dutch to give their tokens to stressed players. I feel the answer could still go either way with both of these questions, but I believe that they will fall on the same side.

You can send them the whole list in an e-mail. They might not answer any of it, but a human will actually look at it. There is a link for it somewhere on the site.

The X-Wing solo play website www.xwing.runbam.com. I ran into something confusing. Part of the Actions phase on the site states that a Target Lock is a "free action" then says to "always use a focus".

The Core Set rule book does not define "actions" and "free actions", however both are listed on many ships action selection and the rule book does say that only one "action" can be taken at a time.

So, can someone tell me the difference between an "action" and a "free action"?

Never mind. Moments after posting this I found a post with an answer.

However the AI site is still confusing regarding target locks, it says:

1. "Obtain a Target Lock on targeted ship as a free action. Clear target lock at end of turn."

Then gives the player the other options from the ships action bar, suggesting that the player use the action that would get the AI ship out of the player ship firing arc. Or suggests an action that would place the player ship inside the AI ship firing arc.(IE using barrow roll or boost)

The last option states: "always use a focus".

I've simply been choosing the most tactically sound option for the situation while following the Core Set rules to the best of my ability but any input would be appreciated.

Strange thread to necro with a completely unrelated question...

I have no idea what this solo play website is (and the link doesn't work for me), but the rules from the rulebook and FAQ are correct. Any other source that has an explanation that goes against those rules is incorrect.

That said, I suspect the website is attempting to present some modified rules for AI behavior in solo play, which will not conform to the actual rules of the game (ie the computer cheats, common in video games) in order to make the AI more difficult to defeat.
