Maester of Sun and saving from terminal effect

By TinyGrimes, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

So according to the FAQ:

"A "terminal effect" is any effect that would
cause a card to become Moribund and would
still cause that card to be Moribund even after
the card was saved.
A card cannot be saved from a terminal effect
unless that saving effect also removes it from
the terminal state."

So I understand that if someone Flame Kisses my Maester of Sun he cannot save himself. However, can he attempt to save himself and fail. More specifically can I trigger his save attempt and then play He Calls it Thinking to cancel said attempt and then attach it to a different character. There is nothing in the FAQ that I see which bars one from attempting to save from a terminal effect. Rather it is clearly stated that this save would not be successful. Ktom, any thoughts on this. Has my "proplay" actually been cheating. Thanks in advance for your wisdom.

In short: Yes, your pro-play, is in fact against the rules. You cannot even initiate a save, unless it also removes the terminal effect. Maester of the Sun's doesn't. This has been discussed in several threads on these boards, so there's plenty of places to read from.

Here's a list of relevant threads from a quick search:

Terminal effects in general here .

Maester Aemon here .

A more complicated scenario with Maester Wendamyr etc here .

Terminal effects in general again here .

Some more talk about Maesters and burn again here .

Again here with Wendamyr.

And that's only the first few that came up from my search. I guess what I'm trying to hint at is, that you should read the Dear Archmaester in this Q&TR, that explains how you can search the forums with Google. ; )

The relevant fact is that "cannot" means "don't even try" in AGoT.

If an effect has the word "cannot" in its description, then it is an absolute: That effect may not be overridden by other effects.

A character that cannot be killed/saved/etc. may not be chosen for that effect.

So, the FAQ says "a card cannot be saved from a terminal effect unless…". That means you will not meet the play restrictions on your save against a terminal effect. You are not allowed to even attempt to save from a terminal effect, unless that save will also remove the character from the terminal state.

Alright thanks for the response guys. I guess I will have to check out your article as the forums are not an easy place to find relevant information, especially not at 2 am on little sleep.

I'm quoting from the FAQ, which you can download from this site.
