Tournament in DC Metro Area

By pitsch, in X-Wing Organized Play

I want to do a tournament on either Oct 14th or the 21st. I have sent emails to Game Parlor and a few libraries around the area to see if we can use a room. I'm waiting for response, but i want to see who in the DC Metro area is interested. I want to keep the price as low as possible, but still offer prizes, maybe a booster or something for the winner. If I am able i want to charge less the $5, but i dont know what Game Parlor charges for tournament usage. I know the library is free but they may not let this type of group use their rooms.

Also Im looking for someone to help run the tournament with me as well so i can play in it too. If you are interested shoot me a line or text me 7036786330

I would be willing to run a tournament with you, but unfortunately Sundays just don't work for me. I am a huge football fan and I won't be giving up a Sunday until the season ends. sad.gif I have been scoping out some places in the area to run tournaments, but unfortunately the Game Parlor is the only real option I've seen so far. Most other places don't have tables big enough to hold a 3'x3' play area. Hopefully soon, we can get some boards big enough that we can put on top of tables that will cover our play area. Kris and I have been talking about this for a few weeks. I would rather not play at the Game Parlor, because I don't like spending $2 just to sit down and play. I would prefer that tournament money go towards prizes. But if that is what we have to do, then I guess we'll do it.

Sounds like a great idea! I'm personally okay with paying Game Parlor $2 for table space; otherwise, they wouldn't make any money off of us unless we buy some stuff at the store. Plus they do have to pay the rent and utilities that allows us the space to play as well.

My weekend schedule tends to be a bit in flux and dependent on weather, but I'll do my best to participate!

My first reason for not wanting to pay the $2 is because they are the only store where I've ever played at who charged for table space. I believe that if we are playing in a tournament and collecting an entry fee, part of that could go toward store credit for the winner. That way the Game Parlor makes something from the tournament. Plus, the fact that we are in the store means that we are more likely to buy something from them, which I usually do when I'm in there. It just feels like a bar with a 2 drink minimum, but they never give you your drinks. If there was something other than table space that came with the $2, it wouldn't bother me as much. But that $2 goes no where. A store is supposed to pay its bills with purchases.

I used to play at the Game Parlor in Woodbridge before they started charging $2 just to sit down and play. I can tell you that it pissed a lot of people off when they decided to implement the $2 rule. When approached with the idea of part of our entry fee money going to towards store credit, the idea was shot down. So we took our tournaments to another store. It was a little further away, but it was definitely worth it. We found a store who cared about its players and did things to make them want to come back. I was happy to drive a little further to play and to make my purchases from a store who appreciated its players. I never got that from the Game Parlor. There are a few employees who I really like, but the policies are made by the owner. He is the one who is profiting from the $2 fee. I don't like that.

Your points make sense. I guess I'm biased towards Game Parlor since I used to play SWCCG tournaments over a decade ago and haven't been back since the $2 policy was implemented. I've been talking with some friends about the entry fee and it's a split decision. Having the money count towards a credit makes sense and it's disappointing that the idea was shot down.

There is a placed called Huzzah hobbies in Ashburn that does not charge a table fee. I've played there several times with another Miniatures game and the people there are a joy to play with. So it's a great environment. http://www.huzzahhobbies.com/ Although I'm assuming it'd be a hike for the folks in Woodbridge.

Any word on the place in Springfield?
