This is an idea I floated with my gaming brothers recently and wondered if people here wouldn't mind sharing their experiences of either running or taking part in a 'Cloak and Dagger' or 'Enemy Within' style campaign that I could mercilessly poach?
I want to take the Warband from the Vortex and insert them into the Imperium to establish a cult, perhaps on Malfi or maybe Scintilla, where the players will have the opportunity, if they know their onions, to exploit the enmity between the two worlds. Making their way into the Expanse was one idea I had since from their it should be more feasible to find both legit and illegitimate passage through the Koronus Passage and into the Calixis Sector. I want to give them as many opportunities to choose between means of travel, do they risk it with a Smuggler or try and blag it aboard a loyalist Rogue Trader? Just getting to the world of choice should be a campaign in itself, dodging security checks, hiding their allegiances, avoiding being sold into slavery by pirates or jettisoned by suspicious Captains and not to mention all the bribery, blackmail, intimidation and corruption they'll need to dish out.
A cool idea I had for arrival at the world was that the characters will be given the opportunity to acquire grav-chutes, either as their 'Plan A' method of arrival or as an emergency 'The Grox Turd's Hit the Turbine Plan X' which could put them in all kinds of trouble.
I think once they actually make it to their destination hive most of my story telling work would be done and the campaign would shift its story drive from being GM driven to a more sandbox world where the players now have to choose where to start. Its this last aspect I'm most interested in, how have other's established their own cults in the past? And how did you conclude those campaigns eventually? Sucking Malfi into the Screaming Vortex might be a bit beyond the scope of the campaign… but corrupting the Nobility or Crimelords could be a good aim, or maybe uncovering a lost Relic etc. I've got plenty of ideas, such as corrupting the latest and greatest Imperial Navy Void Ship with obscene yet incomprehensible iconography and shapes, but I'm keen to hear other ideas.
Thanks.
