A Russian Movie, Dark Heresy style.

By ClockworkGecko, in Dark Heresy

I came across this awhile back and found it again recently. Tell me if this doesn't look like a Dark Heresy game put to celluloid minus the GW intellectual property. It's called "The Inhabited Island". It came out in Russia last year, though I don't know if it has hit the States yet.

Hmmm seems yet again nothing is working right. I will fix this.

In the meantime here is the address.

I'd say it certainly looks like it could fit in 40k, except for one feature. It's far too bright. Though the settings were gritty, there was too much sunlight. If they toned down the colors and slapped on some Imperial eagles, it'd be set.

If you ignore the anime bits, the live action version of Casshern is rather dark. I could see it taking place on an Imperial world, or perhaps a Forge World with all the robots in it and the titan at the end.

With this movie, Mutant Chronicles and Damnatus it is obvious that a 40K movie could be made, and done very well.

Of course a 40k movie could be made and made well, but I don't think such would happen in the near future.

However, for what it's worth, a director friend of mine is trying to convince his main cgi guy to work with him on a cgi 40k movie. He will, of course, not use any distributors and go strait for a viral release. He just feels that there needs to be at least one major quality 40k movie out there for the fans and I can get behind that. I just wish he was able to convince some of his financiers to lose a few hundred grand so he could do a live action one, but most investors like to at least get their money back if not more.

I'd actually prefer a CGI movie verses a real-life one. The latter would be a horrific search for actors who are not only talented enough to pull it off without raising eyebrows but also those that have the right looks. Yes the make-up department could do a lot but I see most life-action remakes of a fictive universe failing because actors don't look right.
Hardest part would be the script; what kind of story would you like to portray in a setting so large? I personally wouldn't know where to begin and how to make sure all the fans like it.

Well, when you're talking an introduction story to Warhammer 40k, your only choice is to go classic. Touch the main core that everyone involved in the hobby would be familiar with. Imperials vs Chaos. Then, you need to pick a story in a setting that movie audiences can recognize or relate to even if they're not familiar with the incredible amount of lore. Relatable characters would be prefer too. As such, the story would need to be centered around the Inquisition or the Imperial guard. More than likely it would be the Imperial Guard, with perhaps parts in the story for the Inquisiton and perhaps even space marines. Then all you need to do is tell a story about the Imperial Guard vs some Chaos force, probably in a developing world with a level of technology associated with the cyberpunk genre, again so non-fans can relate. I think with those guidelines, you'd have the perfect scenario for an introductory movie.

If you ask me though, Warhammer 40,000 is too big for just one movie, or even a trilogy. I think either a mini-series, or a full weekly hour-long television series would be in order. If it's the prior, you could probably have a different story addressing a different set of elements in the 40k universe for each episode. If it was the ladder, then you'd need to center the story around relatable central characters, which once again means Inquisition or Imperial Guard. However, with the span of time in which to explain things that a television series grants you, the producers could probably get away with Space Marines as well.

Space Marines vs Orks and then Chaos. It would be awesome!

And that Russian flick looks pretty cool too.

It's like Terry Gilliam's "Brazil" mixed with "Twelve Monkeys" with mutants and a pretty boy.

That said it looks interesting, I like Russian underground war/sci-fi films.

Incidentally, this is based upon a book by the Soviet science-fiction writers the Strugaysky Brothers, the same people who wrote the book Stalker is based on.

There is a 40K film out there, and it's name is Damnatus. I was impressed with the finished version. As of right now, it looks like the only way we'll get more 40K on the big or small screen is to do it ourselves. That being said, Games Workshop did try many years ago, and the result was Inquisitor.
