I was just wondering which races other players enjoy the most and for what reasons. I've only played a couple of times so I haven't been able to assess each one individually. Any opinions about races would be appreciated!
Favorite Races?
I like the L1Z1X, largely because of the theme. In previous editions it seems they were more malevelolent and barbaric, but in TI3, they are still ruthless, but seem to be more of an enigma as to who they are and what their agenda is. I like enigma's in my thematics in games.
I have always enjoyed playing the Barony of Letnev, for imagery and for their game bonuses.
the Xxcha - Their difficult to win with, so there's a built in challenge, and you get to test all the limits of your actual diplomatic skills
Mentak -- They're just so darn fun early in the game.
Hacan -- Just b/c of all the money
L1z1x -- They kill stuff
LEAST FAVORITE
Yssaril -- Expect to be hammered from both sides.
If referencing the standard races, I would wholeheartedly say the Yin. They are not only a good race, but fit my playing style the best. The L1z1x are a close second.
Hacan!
Their abilities are very interresting to play!
I have to say Winnu.....nice abilities, great race tech, fine art and I love their background.
Hacan is also nice.
The race I dont like is Sardakk norr.....boring abilities, and Mentak because....I just dont like them (perhaps because all the other players in my group like them).
At last, every game should have federation of Sol....because human has to take part in galaxy games.
My favorites would be
Hacan
Winnu
Mentak

Do you still find them to have a "great race tech" with the FAQ change? I haven't played with the Winnu since the change, so I can't say either way.

I see you point, have not seen the rule before.
Do this mean that Winnu only could trade one AC for one TradeGood each round? If so, it is not that good anymore, and a sad thing for Winnu.
The Winnu can no only trade in once per round according to the new FAQ.
Too bad now as sometimes it was nice to throw away an AC for 1 CC and then also use it for 2 TG as well. I Liked the house rules better that it could be used any time rather than an action as that does not take away to much of the RT power but stopped the skipping. FFG seems to have really jumped harder on it than was needed. But then again if your group still is playing by the original rulebook and not the new FAQ 2.2 then it is still powerful. I usually have a vote before a game to decide which rule on the Winnu we want to use before any races are handed out. Usually we leave tham as they are written.
I'm entertained so far by the fact that most people who commented on this thread's favorite race is also the race they use for their profile picture. I guess that's a no-brainer though. Personally Muatt isn't my favorite, but I think they look cool.
So far I've enjoyed playing as the Yin Brotherhood, but I want to try a game as every race in the game, even though I expect that will take a long long time (it's hard to get my friends together for a 3-6 hour game of TI)
I agree with Tawnos76, that it should be voted for pre-race-handout.
All of the races are cool in their own way, thats what makes this game great. And they all seen more or less balanced. In my group we also use some of Grummores races (Firijji and Tlet). It is fun to have that many races, because no game is alike. The only thing I personally would like, as mentioned before, if that Federation of Sol should always play, just because I like the thought that humans colonize the galaxy.
I DID see one comment somewhere on why the "at any time" only partially "solves" the Winnu power.
As written, the Winnu have AMAZING skip abilities near the end. If they have a lot of "useless" cards, each card can equate to TWO skips: 1 to get a CC with their ability, and a second to "waste" the CC with a dummy activation.
If the ability was changed to an "at any time", this would still give them pretty decent skipping power: They can just cash in some ACs for a bunch of CC's, and then use those CC's as dummy activations.
Perhaps, though, a compromise that may help keep it from being almost unuseful, without making them a Yssaril-like skipping race, would be this:
The ability can be used at any time, but can only be used to purchase a CC once per round. Thus, you could use it to gather a bunch of TGs, and TGs can be powerful in large numbers, but you can't use them to form a continual spam of skips. (though you could use it in a pinch).
The Muaat and the Sol, while maybe not the MOST potent races, are kept pretty decent because they CAN use CC's as an action, but not even have to "waste" them. However, this tradeoff is that they generally have to "pay" for those CC's that they burn, so it's not quite as easy to horde them, whereas the Winnu could if they have a hand of mediocre ACs.
I love the Clan of Saar <3 there so much fun to play early in the game ... with there movement and TG's for planets
But they get worse as the game goes on...but early game I love them
I also love Mentak because they are also a very fun race to play ... stealing warsuns FTW
lol .. not that ive ever done it
Other races I love playing as:
Yssaril and L1Z1X
I hate playing as Sardakk n'orr and Xxcha
i'm basically ignorant and new to the game. I've just played Yssaril and Sol... and I had fun with both.
I think I probably enjoyed Sol more. I'd like to try playing them again. Hypermetabolism looks fun... and I think it's only two tech advances away for Sol from the start of the game.
Xxcha...
Slow start race but if played right they are almost untouchable near the end...Start with Production and then Assembly then Diplomacy then Assembly then Diplomacy again...
A very fun race to play if you just remember "to sell" the speaker token and your political capabilities...Turn the warmongers one against the other...And most of all be political...

They starts so slow that the game is almost ever finish before you can catch up with more of the other races.

I had made a lot of comment about this.
If at any time, you cannot stops Winnu from claiming spend objectives with any playing interactions.
If Winnu is crushed to death, the can ditch 5, 6 AC to receive TG and found your other neighbor to war against you.
Then each other round transform his 2 new ACs in TG to continue such founding.
He also can exchange all his AC just before using X-89 without having to spend 6 turns in the round to do so.
He can also ditch AC when he see an Agenda comming that will cause lost of ACs to all players.
I had like 5 to 8 other ways that the any times could be abused.
I´d like Mentak most in low Player games ( 3-4 Players). In larger game i prefer Muuath or Emirats.
Guess what's my favorite race...
The action card I'm most afraid of is the "Local unrest card".
If you concentrate on an offensive or establish your "front line" you often don't care about docks on none home systems... and the came the local unrest.
So I fortify my key-planets step by step with ground forces without a transfer action.
Unfortunately at the beginning of a new game - we draw the races by random so I can't lead the Federation of Sol to a glourious victory every game.
(...or be wiped out by trying it. LOL).
I like the XXCHA too. It's the perfect race for a noble player.
What can be more glourious then unite the galaxy by diplomacy?
My favorite races is probably the Barony of Letnev.
Their HS is IMHO the best racial ability in the game. I always get the same Techs with them:
Enviro, Sarween and XRD (ADT if I have resources to burn).
By double docking their HS, they can get up to 4 resources worth of free ships per round. That combined with their HS of 6 resources means you can build 1 Carrier, 6 fighters (or GF's) and 4 Destroyers per round.
By the third or fourth round, I have run out of ships to buy and have no problem getting an objective every round. You have the resources to get Tech if you need it for VP's.
The Naalu Collective.
I think their backstory is pretty creepy, and the 0 initive ability is potent in close games.
The one game I actually won was as the Barony. They really seem to suit my playing style.
I have only played once as the Jol Nar and enjoyed the fact that technology was not a problem, for once. I know they have the hideous -1 but with Sarween and Enviro their industrial capabilities are strong off the bat.
Still, I love sending my humies down the green tech path. Uber-Hoomies!!!
