Geezer looking to jump back in...

By Acradius, in UFS General Discussion

Heya folks. I'll keep this short. I used to be product champion in my hometown back when the game was still in its infancy, but I had to move away, and UFS died here. Now I'm looking to revive it, but I'm using some pretty ancient stuff. If I were going to try and keep it tourney legal around here, what sets do I need to invest in, and are there any big rule changes I need to be aware of?

you actually picked a good time to jump back in since rotation is just around the corner. look into getting the upcoming stuff (set 12) as well as sets 8-11 (mainly 9 and 11).

set 8- SF Domination, SNK Cutting Edge

set 9- DS Realm of Midnight, SF Deadly Ground

set 10- SNK King of Fighters 2006, SC3 Flash of Blades

set 11- SNK Flames of Fame, SF Warrior's Dream

Realm of Midnight, Flames of Fame and Warrior's Dream are amazing sets, though the first has sold out (you should still try to find some of it). KoF2006 and Flash of Blades were (imo at least) fairly disappointing, and while there are some gems in the sets, there aren't that many and you may be better off trying to get singles instead of boxes from these sets. Deadly Ground is so-so, probably around the level of KoF2006 and Flash of Blades. Cutting Edge had 3 of its cards hit with the Ban Hammer but try to get a box of its Starter Decks anyways (at least a couple of the Mai starters). Domination is solid, and is probably worth getting a box or 2 of.

also, you can run some Legacy tournaments where you'll be able to use your old stuff as long as it isn't banned.

Not to mention the free card promotions FFG is doing.

Glad to see your getting back in dude for set 8 stuff get your store to sign up for this you can get a lot of the cards that way . As well as send in some old CCG decks you play anymore you get new starters for that as well .

Retailers! Jumpstart a UFS Player Base.

Thanks for the tips. Also, I'd like to see if I can find some organized play around here. The people I've played with have definitely evolved our own style, and I want to see if I can get used to tourney play. Is there a list of sanctioned events somewhere that I can find a place close to my little town in Nebraska?

I am only directing him there because he said he was searching for venues . Paul himself told me to use gamers round table until the FFG venue search is working properly .

it is true, gamers round table works better.

Alright, thanks guys. I've got one more question for you all. After browsing around the forums here for awhile, I've heard mention of these 'top tier' cards. First of all, is there a list that I can look at for them? And second, what's the reliance on them? Is it a matter of showing up with a deck full of them or eating my teeth, or are they just popular choices because of how they've been used in the past?

Also, someone mentioned rotation happening soonish. When will that hit?

You really got to more specific each resource has a set of top tier cards nothing else search twoheadeddragon.com they have a UFS data base.

rotation hits in march.

the only true staples are olcadon's mentoring, and seal of cesation, cards that go in 95 percent of ufs decks because they are amazing and have the infinity symbol. other good cards include:

lord of the makai (free momentum akin to hop, except its a foundation with a 6 check)

tag along (character negation and recursion in one package)

kung fu training (speed pump and action negation)

defender (insane looping, for the cost of one momentum you can add an atack other then this atack from your card pool to your hand.)

mega spike (a 3/3 throw, and the favourite defender loop target)

feline spike (the best atack in the game, a multiple 2 atack that can deal 24 dmg with only it's own e.

chester's backing (a foundation that can negate anything in your oponents staging area excluding characters)

blood runs true (cc hax and drawpower)

rejection (an e that reduces an atack to 1 dmg all in a 1/5 package)

fight or flight (double the printed dmg of an atack)

there are more cards, but i will get arthritis if i list them all.

There are top-tier cards but alot of those top-tier cards are commons or uncommons....or can be found in a starter deck so its not hard ot get a hold of alot of them as long as you dont plan on attending any major events in the future the game will come to you and in time you will know what cards are good and bad and learn to build good decks

as for rotation all the sets listed will still be legal once the new set drops and rotation hits next month

you should definitely sign of for the program that was stated above though its a way to get some of the older stuff for free and jumpstart a playerbase

Hmm let's edit this list and make it better albeit accurate.

LOTM: 4 symbols, sports a +1 mid block and 6cc, already better stats than higher calibur. Free momentum generation for all your needs. ( Multiple, powerful etc. Using brackets in the right place unlike Trane etc.) ALSO it's arguably the best way to recur attacks as it's second E basicly let's you recur attacks at will. If not it's a good way to get card advantage.

Tag along: Arguably the best common printed come block 3. Sporting half of all the resource symbols! It's F simply is efficient at fishinga nything out. and the R is invaluable, their character temporarily just becomes statistic. ( Best counter against charcter specific decks like Hanzo etc.)

Kung fu training: Not so fantastic IMO. Sporting half the symbols. it's overextending, but at the same time very good at pushing things through. With the decline of actions this thing is much less popular though.

Defender: INSANE with lotm. Which is waht you need to look out for or get if you plan to go competitive because defender is the godfather of loopage. It can loop your blocks as it targets any card other than the enhanced attack in question. can loop rejection. and can loop your attacks
(I.E a throw, say mega spike.) for near infinite damage.

Also has an attack side that's quite decent xD

Mega spike: Hard to find throw. Primary defnder target for loopage win. Also the 6 diff action is useful in tough situations.

Feline spike; the 1 check killing machine. With undiscardable mulitples and the Water symbol it's often well worth it. Especially when palyed as an up to 24 dmg reversal, anyone?

Chester' backing: regionals promo. Foundation that completely negates other foundations at the cost of commiiting (READ: NOT assets.)

Blood runs true: A starter box topper that never should've happened. David freeman's red headed step child.

But otherwise Trane hit the nail on the head.

happy hunting!

Cheers

Hanzo.

after half a page of corections you still say i hit the nail on the head? boy do i love sarcasm.

Chester's Backing isn't technically a regionals promo like foily Red Lotus is. Chester's was in the prize support from August until around December/January and can probably be found now in Legacy support.
