Looking to the future

By Plushy, in Only War

While the game itself isn't out yet, we already have a pretty solid idea of what's in the game and what isn't. Only War has 12 specializations and 8 regiments pre-made, plus a regiment creation system. There's vehicles and gear and tasty enemy profiles. But what comes after the core rulebook? What do you guys want?

I would love to see additional rules get thrown into the regiment creation stuff. More specializations would be adored (Sabatorum Agent, Sniper, etc) and there are plenty of great regiments to add in (Valhallans and the Armageddon Steel Legion for sure). I've seen a lot of clamoring for Imperial Navy rules; at the very least, rules for a Valkyrie.

Imperial Navy I'd say should be a seperate book all by itself (the "Battlefleet Koronus" of OW, if you like), and additional archetypes beyond the ones that have already been presented could be great for OW's answer to the Inquisitor's Handbook/Into the Storm.

I do, however, agree with what some people have been saying that Valkyries should absolutely be in the core book if drop-troopers are, though the problem with that is that it would require an entire new section on aerial combat and such, so it might even be better to strip drop-troopers out of the core book and hold them back until OW's IH/ItS alike comes out. Perhaps the space that is freed up by doing so (one space opens up in "regiment type" and not having the Elysian Drop Troopers sample regiment frees up an entire page) could be spent adding in rules for roughriders as people have suggested. As they've pointed out, hunting lances are already in, so why not the people who would use them? Rules for horses, Tauros and Venators couldn't possibly take up more than a page. Oh and the core needs listings for how much ammo various vehicles can carry for their weapons, but I've talked enough about core already in this thread ostensibly about stuff that should come AFTER core…

Probably one of the obvious ones is a bestiary-style book. The OW bestiary should provide GMs with infomation about each of the 'main' enemy 40K armies (Tau, Eldar, Dark Eldar, Chaos, Necrons, Orks and Tyranids?) operates and how they're organised in addition to simply listing what forces they can deploy. It ought to give GMs ideas about how each enemy behaves as an overall fighting force, which will in turn help them determine what kinds of forces the players might realistically end up facing in a given part of the warzone.

I've always had a bit of an issue with Elysians being in core without their main vehicles, Valkyries and the Tauros. That's just not right; I'd rather wait to see them done properly than have half their rules.

Horses and Bikes would be lovely, seeing as Hunting Lances are in. Rough Riders could be a fun Specialization.

I think that OW is keeping to Chaos/Renegades, Orks, and Dark Eldar as their enemies. Though the Guard fights all of those other things, 'Nids and Necrons will tear through them like a hot chainsword through some skull-butter.

I'm surprised they're not dealing with the Tau. The Tau would provide some challenging gunfights, as well as providing the temptation of taking the enemy's pulse rifle because your lasgun isn't as strong as you'd like it to be. Not to mention the drama of dealing with Gue'vesa auxiliaries who willingly forsook the Emperor in favor of the Greater Good. Perhaps the PCs, in their darkest hour, might feel the temptation to defect themselves.

I'd also like to see a non-Codex xeno race like the Enoulians or the Rak'Gol or the Thyrrus. This would keep the players guessing.

The thing is, a Pulse Rifle would likely toast a Guardsman in a hit or two. Same goes for an Ion Cannon against a Sentinel or Chimera. While fluffy, it could be quite lethal.

…which is fine. I think they make a grand deal more sense than Dark Eldar, and that's coming from someone whose favorite army is the Dark Eldar.

Here (except gue'vesa auxiliaries) I am happy I have the DW core and MotX books. I agree in full with you, and plan on using them. But I also can see why they weren't put into OW. The Dark Eldar could be a terrifying opponent, say if they got captured…

I'm sure we'll see some sort of detailed campaign book. I'm also sure we'll have an entire book or most of a book dedicated to vehicles as they seem to be as big a part of the game as the gun fights we're used to already from other systems.

As for more detailed stuff I'm not sure yet. I'd like to see what they do with the first couple supplements.

Perhaps… there may be a "Specialties by Regiment" section/book in the future? I can see there being a good deal of use for that, by giving options to better suit the Regiment. Kasrkins for Cadia, Quartermasters/Watchmasters/Grenadiers for Krieg, etc… as more and more "non-standard" regimental specialties need to be fleshed out.

Maybe not a whole book, but perhaps a section?
