Digital Arkham?

By mechangel, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

I know some people will balk, but I think it would be awesome to get a video game version of Arkham Horror. It would be really nice to be able to play with friends all over the world. A built in atmospheric soundtrack that would build up at key moments, little cuscene vingettes for encouters, I think it would be amazingly awesome. It would also eliminate rules arguements. I love the board and you could play along with a real board if you want, or have part of your party in the room and have the digital version so an absent friend could join in. I would totally want to work on this, it would be so much fun.

I've thought the very same thing, recently. Could be extremely lovely if the mechanics are sound and good graphics could add a lot to the mood (just like the music). I'd defnitely buy it for those evenings we can't get a group together - playing the board game alone is a lot of work.

Whoever starts doing this, make sure you have the written blessing of Fantasy Flight...!!!

I myself has gotten into a lot of legal trouble since me and my friend did a remake of Space Hulk.

I'd love to participate with the music...

I started making something a long time ago on the old forums when I cam up with de idea, with the help of the Fantasy Grounds 2 program which basically lets people play DnD over the internet...all you actually need to do is write the rules in code and get some few decent pictures, sound tracks etc... But I quit that a long time ago, cause of lack of FFG blessing and lack of Fantasy Grounds 2 Blessing (even though modding it isn't illegal in anyway, its made to be played with more sets of rules). And lastly I got bored... because of lack of interest on all parts.

There has been a digital port of Descent in the work for quite some time ( http://battlepawn.com ) but FFG eventually pulled the plug on this project because of 'creative differences'.

I guess FFG is very protective of its IP and would want to keep a firm grip on such project, supposing they would authorize it.
Besides, I think the amount of work involved - considering the sheer amount of cards, items and effects - is considerable.

I don't think such a project could be done 'casually'. If FFG wanted a digital port of AH, they would rely on professional developers.
But, who knows?

Are you the creator of the teardown.se remake? That remake is totally awesome, it's a real shame GW and THQ took it down.

Yes I am along with my friend Niklas.. thank you for the very kind words.. as you might understand I know exactly how much work you'll have to put down in order to get a decent computergame out of a boardgame... and Space Hulk is pretty straightforward without any cards or random events.. although Arkham Horror would have no real AI.. it's doable.. but as a I said.. make sure FFG is backing you up and doesn't change their mind halfway through..

That Space Hulk remake was great, Svavelvinter. I stumbled upon it years back and it impelled me to rescue all my old GW boxes from the attic and get back into boardgaming, which in turn led me to the joys of AH. So thanks for that.

GW's attitude towards you guys' work was a crying shame - yet another tradegy of the anti-commons.

Many boardgames would be stellar as computerversions but I'm not sure Arkham Horror is one of them. It has its charm with all those cards, playarea like a small fotball-field and getting your friends together against unthinkable odds. Even the possibility to play this as a solo-game work against the concept of a computer-game. That, and the fact that FFG might loose a lot of money if people start playing the digital version instead of bying all the expansions. Now matter how much FFG love boardgames and their fans it's still a company trying to make a profit and keep their employees.

I doubt they would let us make it ourselves, it would probably get sourced out to a development studio. We can always make other Lovecraft inspired games if we want though.

I got laid off from an Activision studio at Christmas, and I've been working on a game about a friendly monster getting a kitten through a hostile monster dimension called Monster "Heart" Kitty . My team and I made it for a game jam really quickly, and now are fixing it up and adding functionality, new art, new music etc.. I previously just used some free music for the game jam, but I'm going to have to come up with a real soundtrack for when we publish it on Xbox Live Arcade Creators Club.

Sorry to hear about the layoff MechAngel. I'd be happy to participate in a Lovecraftian inspired video game. I sent an email via the game link, but feel free to contact me via the links in my signature line. To bad there isn't a PM option here - or am I missing it?

I recall a Electronic Arts Spacehulk Game around 1993 - I think it was for the Amiga 500. Or was it the C64 - (that dates me). I recall it being pretty cool, but really difficult. I think it had a sequel 'Deathwing'? Memory is a bit cloudy on it...

Got your email! I sent you one from my personal email as well. Yeah, no PM is kind of odd!
