Long term release plans

By TieDefender, in X-Wing

I believe that FFG is more into getting games on the market than actual milking them. I would really love to see FFG run XWM for a few more years, as they are doing a great job, but I doubt that it will happen (probably 2-3 more years I'd say). Let's just hope that an almost as cool company is getting it then (not some dudes like Wizkids, which really only want to milk the market)...

Holy mother of necrothreads.

I think the LCGs, Descent, the RPG, and even this game points to the fact that FFG isn't above milking a game. Granted, I would say FFG's milking of a game is far different than Wizkids. But even then, you just have to look at what is coming. FFG is beginning to ramp up the products for X-wing. And while it won't be nearly as bad as Wizkids, you would have to be blind to not see what FFG is doing.

Return on investment ;-)

I'm sure it's quite a challenge to get even after you purchase a license for something like Star Wars - I have no idea at what price something like that hovers, but I'm sure you need some money to get it.

And it's a miniature game, you must be blind or not very well informed to not know what that means :-)

(even if you don't take GW as an example - they are above all in terms of insanely milking their happy customers - all miniature games live off constant releases).

But there's quite a difference between putting out releases and really pushing it hard by voiding existent rules and models to force people into buying your new stuff. There still heavy use on the basic models (X-Wings and TIEs) as they are essential to the game, and I don't see a change for that (even with Wave 4 showing on the horizon).

Well they'd be stupid not to try to sell more x-wing if we're willing to buy it. As long as we keep buying, I have no idea why they would not keep selling.

What I really can't see happening is that FFG would abandon XWM before the new sequels arrive. There WILL be merchandising co-released with the new star wars films, and it would be silly not to release new products in a popular, proven system. It would even be worth a shot if interest has dropped off by then.

Also I saw all this happen in my crystal ball when I was on acid yesterday, so there's that, too.

Thats just it though, thats the whole reason they r likely to mix prequel stuff with OT stuff cuz it gives fans more to buy. I dont mind the prequal stuff coming out at the same time like lotr is doing with the hobbit cards, its a different game with the same mechanics that can be compatible if players want to battle droid fighters against tie fighters or x-wings ect. And lets not forget the Y-wing is technically already a clone wars era ship. I think they would release them together and each would produce expansions regularly, it makes the most fiscal sense for them. Cuz they can only do so much with the OT before they r just either running out or reissuing x-wing and ties with different pilot cards. (id rather new pilots be released with my card expansion idea lol). They r going to have to either move to prequel era or EU era ships in order to keep the game going and i for one would love either or. For ppl who wanna keep it OT like i said they dont gotta buy the other era ships, and they can keep their games OT only. Im a collector at heart so the more different ships they put out the happier ill be.

i ***** agree with u the mopre ships the better for a collector like me and more things to build for the lists i do have !!

Yeah, I think the only way that FFG will stop making X-Wing in the near future is going to be due to licensing issues. Otherwise, I don't see why they would stop. Sure, they may not introduce a ton more new ships, as they seem to have hit the really important ones already. But they certainly haven't exhausted all the possibilities for the ships that are currently out, either. The Imperial Aces expansion showed us that. Repaints and more upgrade options for those Interceptors. I could see the A-Wing, Y-Wing and Tie Advanced all going through the same makeover process. And I think there's got to be a few more Huge ships left to be built. They could keep this game fresh for at least a couple more years.

The real question for you collectors out there is "What is the long range plan for me?" In twenty years, will you be able to sell the game pieces at a premium, or will Disney have diluted the value of this Iconic game by revising the EU to eliminate some things already in the game while simultaneously flooding new ships and characters into the DU  with a slough of new movies?

They dropped wings of war a couple years ago, the original owner got the rights back and the game is flourishing now (WWI & WWII) with a new company, with a new spin off crammed sails of glory.. A similar concept with old ships from the age of sail... who knows why companies drop a product...Especially a popular one.

I don't think I would ever sell my x-wing swag.

The challenge will be finding rebellion era rebel star fighters the imperials have missile boat, gunboat, avenger, scimtar bomber while the rebels mainly have larger ship options.

Well, there's the Cloakshapes and the various light freighters (which might be what you mean by larger ships?).
