A Nooob 'thinking' of getting into X-Wing!

By Kurtus, in X-Wing

Hi everyone!

I saw the vids on this game and thought to myself… WOW! Looks awesome indeed. Great fun it looks. The fact that it's a pre-painted miniatures game was a HUGE plus for me, as my time is limited, and I play enough miniatures games as it is!

Anyway… the game over-all looks amazing. Game play seems really refreshing and simple. However… I do have one concern. First off… I am not a HUGE Star wars fan (dodging behind cover at this point!), but I do like the feel and look of this game. My concern is if this game can keep a nooobb (that is NEW to the rules, as well as Star wars genre) interested! I am thinking this game may be a lil on the light side as far as rules and tac. options. (not saying it is overly simple game).

I know the game is still new, but I am sure there are a good number of players out there already who have a good many battles under their belts already. What do you guys think about this? Also… what rules are there to keep the game refreshing? Campaigns? Scenario generators?

Would love some feed back. Danka :)

Would you consider yourself a "hard core gamer" or more casual? What other games do you really like?

I LOVE the mechanics of this game. I think its relatively simple and elegant, but allows for LOTS of depth. There are dice used, but with the cunning use of focus you can really drastically change the odds of scoring hits or dodging. I like this because dice games can be boring (why not just throw a tub of dice on the table and compare results and not even bother moving our plastic crap around). For me the fun part is the maneuvering. The mechanic of simultaneously picking direction and speed makes for a great game of guessing, second guessing and bluffing.

I wouldn't consider myself a hard core Star Wars fan, but I LOVE the old trilogy from when I was a kid. I don't know all of these pilot names, save the main characters like wedge and luke and vader. This game does take me back to the wonder of the movies when I first saw them as a kid and became obsessed with space battles and lightsabers. HOWEVER, if this game had a different skin (say world war 2, or modern aerial combat, or naval warfare) I would still really really really like the mechanical structure of the game.

I don't know if this helps you. In short, I LOVE the design whether its Star Wars or something else. It also doesn't hurt that I love the sights and sounds and narrative of Star Wars, and this game brings some of that back for me.

Positives:

NOT collectible. Expansions and starter come with prescribed contents, so you know what you are getting. No "buy more to win" factor

Great game play design - its a really fun and easy to learn game with lots of tactical depth. So far seems very well balanced to me.

Can be played very enjoyably with 2 players or more (which is uncommon in wargaming)

Its Fantasy Flight, so it has a high aesthetic fidelity and quality (the miniatures are FANTASTIC compared to industry standard)

Negatives:

For you, you're not crazy about Star Wars

Possibly cost, but I think you get quite a bit for the $$ and you can buy as much or as little of the expansion stuff as you want

Yeah… that's what I was thinking. I'm not BIG on the Star Wars thing… but I love the way the game is played. Looks very dynamic, with a 'not knowing what the opponent is going to do' factor running very high; nice!

Thanks for the feedback.

Question, is there any kind of 'campaign' play in the rules? Something that can link battles together… perhaps like an experience reward system?

No. There are rules for building equal armies at various point levels, and there are mission scenarios with special objectives and rules. You can also play with multiple players broken into two teams. However, there is no campaign element to the game yet.

I think it would be easy enough to do a home brew map campaign or escalation style league game play.

Once the Falcon comes out, I've got a few ideas for campaigns concerning asteroids… :)

How will you make a play surface which is 18 parsecs long?

oh no wait.. youll be able to do it in 12! :)

If I buy the core set do I get anything extra pilot/upgrade wise by buying the tie fighter expansion? or am I just as well off with the core set if I am happy with 2 tie fighters?

3 named pilots. I think they are essential, but you can do okay with the core set.

You would be fine with just the starter. If you buy a second core set for more fighters at a more cost effective price, then I would suggest you pick up the expansions. This way you get some more pilots and up grade cards, this way you can turn those Rookie pilots into named pilots. Sort of gives you more bang for the buck.
