Do you have to use all the cards in your plot deck?

By mainfrym, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hello I am new here and have tried to search the forums for this but I cant find any topics relating to my question. My girlfriend and I were playing a game and I reached my valar morghulis plot card as the last one in my plot deck. I had some great characters out and was winning so I did not want to use it. Do you have to use all cards in your plot deck before starting it over?

Yes. The rules say:

"If this was the last card in your plot deck,
return all your previously played plots (except
the one just revealed) to your plot deck after your
revealed plot has taken effect."

So, you are not allowed to return your previously played plots to your plot deck until after you have revealed the last plot in your plot card. That mean you will eventually have to use all of the plots in your plot deck - unless, of course, someone wins in 6 or fewer rounds.

We've all been on both sides of that -- having to Valar away all of our own good stuff, and also being relived when an opponent, who had board control over us, was forced to use his/her own Valar.

But, think about how silly the game could get if you didn't have to cycle through all of your plot cards; you could just keep reusing the same plot or two over and over and over…

Hey guys thanks for your reply. I read that part of the rulebook over and over but it did not say you HAVE to use all of them, it just said if this is your last one.

The only way you're going to avoid that, though, is if the game ends before you hit plot 7. Otherwise you WILL use every plot in your plot deck.

I thought I recalled cards that perhaps didn't nullify plot cards, but made a player reveal a new plot card. I don't know if this would stop it, or if both effects would happen. Worse case there is that it is another plot card and you have to gamble on when your opponent will use it or blow a Varys to make it happen. Can someone clarify this for me?

-Is there a reveal a new plot card card?

-Do both effects happen, or just one?

Can you use it on yourself? Because if you can't then its a matter of hoping their last card is it rather than having some options.

The rules say you choose your new plot from the ones you haven't already used. And you don't get to move plots from used to unused until you reveal the last one.

-If you use one of these effects, you have still "revealed" the plot card and your plot card is still as active as if you had revealed it in the plot phase, so of course both plot effects "happen."

-I have no idea what you are trying to do with Varys in your "worst case." Whether a card can be "used on yourself" will depend on the text of the card.

Worst case is your opponent has Valar in their plot deck. Best case is your opponent has Valar in their plot deck. Plan accordingly.

While Valar isn't in every deck I think it is just better to assume it is and be wrong than assume it isn't and be wrong.
