When & how have you received your omnissian axe?

By Marshbaboon, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

Question for more experienced tech priests out there.

What rank, and under what circumstances did you receive your omnissian axe? I'm presuming as per the rules & the fluff it should be awarded by your GM for completing some sort of tech priest related achievement, or side quest.

Should it be pretty much an automatic gain as part of the story? Or should you have to work incredibly hard for a chance of being awarded one?

The most traditional way is probably off the body of one who had one of the things. At the least, a relative availability rating would be nice to have for "mechanicus only" rated equipment, if nothing else to give the odds of someone for your heretek to tear them off of being around on a given location.

They're probably given for decent achievements: Unlike most other pieces of "mechanicus only" equipment, other books actually gave them a rating: At the least, the Sollex and Fallen patterns are Extremely Rare rated weapons. This is on the level of "we will gift you an inferno pistol for your deeds", or at least as hard to requisition. A Biologis not known for combat would likely have something different given to him, but an Explorator or Ordinatus, the 'style' that PCs tend to be, is likely going to get it when others in the party are starting to field plasma and melta weapons [at which point he probably already had one of those]

I've never gotten an Omnissian Axe. The one time I managed to finally do enough stuff to deserve one, the campaign ended. So while I may have an Omnissian Axe, the campaign is over, so I have nothing to use it on. This fills my cranial circuits with dissatisfaction.

Asked the GM about it and he's potentially going to do something involving necrons later on to get a chance at receiving one.

I've achieved some pretty major feats already so I think it'd be fitting.

R-really? Its supposed to be that hard to get one?

I just gave it to the my Tech-priest at rank 6. I was reserving the better quality ones for later- I figured a "Best Quality Axe" would be something that only Rank 8 people get, if they've managed to do some cool stuff during their careers.

With the errata the omnissian axe is one of the best (if not the best) melee weapons in the game. Similar to a power fist I think.

Which Errata are you referring to ? I can't for the life of me see any errata concerning the Omnissian Axe in the DH living errata.

Also, where do you find the other "patterns" of Omnissian Axes that were mentionned ? (Sollex and Fallen or something, not sure).

Thanks in advance.

This one is a bit weird.

In the original BL printing of the Inquisitors Handbook, the Omnissian Axe had a damage profile of 2d5+5, but in the FFG reprint this changed into 2d10+5.

A rather massive change, but it was not mentioned in the Errata.

Later games have gone with the 2d10 profile, but the illustration has also changed to a distinctly 2-handed / pole arm look. Only War also specifies that it is a 2h weapon. The illustration in the IH, however, looks 1h to me. But then the text says "glaive", which is like a halberd. Go figure :)
