Between encounters

By sparhawk1975, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi all,

Can't find a topic about this: is there a cleanup/getting back live between two encounters.

Last night we played a big fat goblin and I was knock out during encounter 1 (and ending knock out with both heroes…yes the game didn't go that well for me ;) ), how do I start encounter 2, knockout?, full health?.

Problem is ofcourse that DL minions are in the same room as you heroes when you start encounter 1….

Thanks

Eerwin

"When players transition from one encounter of a quest to another, they
perform the following steps:
• Heroes keep all damage suffered during Encounter 1.
• Heroes recover all fatigue suffered during Encounter 1.
• Heroes keep all conditions they had at the end of Encounter 1.
• Each hero player flips his Hero sheet faceup.
• Heroes keep all search cards; any flipped cards remain flipped.
• Any knocked out heroes may perform a stand up action for free.
• The overlord player keeps his current hand of Overlord cards.
• Players disassemble the map for Encounter 1 and refer to the Quest
Guide in order to set up the map for Encounter 2." (p. 18)

The question is, do the following two steps apply to KO heroes :

• Heroes recover all fatigue suffered during Encounter 1.

• Any knocked out heroes may perform a stand up action for free.

Huh? This step specifices KO keroes, so why wouldn't it apply? There has been some discussion on BGG whether you are meant to do those steps in order and at least for me, that's the way I've been doing it. So heroes who are still standing get to remove their fatigue, KO heroes only get to stand up which might remove some fatigue.

However, the equation Hero = "non KO Hero" is not clearly stated in the rules (but I do lean towards that reading).

Why not remove the fatigue from the KO'd hero(s)? The rules state "When a hero is defeated, he immediately suffers fatigue up to his Stamina …"

I can't find any rule preventing fatigue from being removed afterwards. Other players can only target the KOH with healing abilities, but there is nothing saying other effects or rules can't remove the fatigue once it has been suffered.

Knocked out heroes aren't affected by effects same way heroes are. To me, by making a distinction in the steps between heroes and KO heroes (and doing them in order as I see it), heroes get the benefit of removing fatigue (but keeping damage), while the KO heroes get a free stand up. There is also nothing that says you CAN remove fatigue from KO heroes. They only mention KO heroes being able to recover damage:

"A knocked out hero may still recover damage from other heroes through
the use of skills, potions, and being revived" (p. 15)

With page 13 differentiating between damage and fatigue.

Thanks, totally forgot about that section on page 18, lol

But I would read; heroes lose fatique, so all heroes, also KO heroes.

Would make sense, because you are just moving from one scene to another and during that time you can rest (eq losing fatique), but probably not wounds because that would take to long. ( a bit AD&D thinking; you won't rush to the next encounter being completly fatiqued and wounded.. ;) )

A thought:, the DL starts with a fresh bunch of minions every quest/encounter, so I think it would off balance a quest if the heroes are fatiqued (because both my heroes were) and only can stand up. With the big fat goblin that would mean for me; only standing up, maybe heal some and BAM there is the attack of full health minions from the DL…this would give the DL in every second encounter a big advantage.

In my humble option it would be more fair that they can start full health and none fatique, in line (and spirit ) of doing a single quest; because I think every quest is balanced with the idea that both heroes and minions start with full health.

Have fun

Looks like the humble people were right:

"Hi Rauli,

Between encounters, any knocked out hero may stand up for free. In addition, heroes that stand up also recover all fatigue as well.

The rules had a certain order to them but the rules didn't specify the order or number the steps…so that makes sense to me.

I also leaned towards, "Heroes, you get to recover all your fatigue, KO'd or not because you need all the help you can get when you are up against me" Muhaha.

Yeah, those sound like they are the wrong way round;

KO'd heroes would Perform Stand Up; Then all Heroes Recover Fatigue.

But the other way round is equally as valid - and an extra insentive for the OL to try and knock out a hero before the end of encounter 1.

I would say give them back their fatigue between encounters though - you are walking from encounter 1 to encounter 2 - there would be time to get back a 1/2 action rest inbetween.

I think there's a reason these items are bulleted and not enumerated: They all happen, but the order is flexible. Honestly, is there any way to "game the system" by putting these events in a different order?
