Two one-handed weapons?

By nuwanda2, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

There is a skill for berserkers which only works if the character uses a two-handed weapon or two one-handed weapon. What's the use wielding two one-handed melee weapons? I can't figure it out…

Melee & ranged. Different surge effects. Roleplaying Drizzt.

WIthout checking the ability of the Berserker, I don't think different surge effect thing works.

"The player must also declare which equipped weapon his hero is using.
Heroes may either attack with one equipped weapon or their bare hands."

"Only abilities on the
chosen weapon may be used; if equipped with two weapons, abilities on
the other weapon are ignored for the attack." (p. 12)

There is also Eliam, whose Heroic Ability works when he is wielding two Melee weapons (kinda sucks for him at the start of a Campaign).

I know you can't use surge effects from both weapons for one attack, but you could equip a Stun (or Blast?) weapon & another with a damage (or Pierce) bonus. Depending on the tactical situation, you either attack with one or the other.

Thats about it really, tactical versatility. For example, the berserker weilding the iron spear and steel broadsword. More damage from the sword or tactical reach/pierce from the spear. That's really about it for now.

I'm quite disappointed they ditched the off-hand bonus feature. It was hardly complicated, and really added another layer of diversity for players.

I mourn its loss.

House rule: You declare the melee weapon you are attacking with, but you may exchange one ability or power die from your off-hand weapon. That shouldn't be too unbalancing. In the example above you could make the Iron Spear blue+red, or give the broadsword Reach or Pierce in place of the damage bonus or re-roll ability.
