Autopsies, Madness, and other necessities for an investigation...

By graver2, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

Just a few questions regarding actions that commonly come up in a game revolving around investigating maddening things and the skills that would govern those actions.

What skills dose a character need to be able to successfully perform an autopsy? Would simple Medicae work even if it seems to be billed off as over glorified first aid or would the character need the advanced knowledge of Master Churgeion? If Medicae is used for performing an autopsy, would it be an Int based test or a Per based test? Would a character need to know more then Medicae or Master Churgion like, perhaps Search (to medically search the corps for a cause of death)? Would such auxiliary skills be needed to succeed or simply offer a +10?

What if someone was poisoned which is clearly outside the sewing meat back up approach of medicae, what would a character need to know? Would chem-use help or would they need the more knowledge intensive Scholastic Lore (chymistry)?

What about tending to someone who's caught ill? Again, it seems out of the range of Medicae's sewing meat back together approach, so what would a character need to diagnose a disease and then prescribe a treatment plan that has any kind of chance of working? Would they even need Medicae or would Trade (Apothecary), Scholastic Lore (chymistry), or even simple Chem-Use work? If they do need Medicae, would they need any other skill or would other skills just offer a bonus? What if the victim was infected with the Fydae virus, what would an examining character need to know to identify what could be going on in the victims body, identify the virus and how it works and is transmitted, and finally, if possible, offer up a counter agent, antidote, or something to hold off the effects for a bit longer?

Is there help for the mentally or emotionally damaged in the 40k universe? If so, what form dose this help commonly take and what skills would be necessary to identify and treat disorders of the mind? Would it be Scrutiny and if so, would it be a Perception test (to notice the problem) or Int test (to know what the problem is)? Would simply being able to read people be enough to know and understand how to treat a mental illness? If not, what other skills would be needed? Beyond that, what skill sets would be needed to know how to successfully mindscrub someone?

In general, unless you can afford it well, there isn't much help for the any damaged in the future. There just isn't a lot of concern for people's mental well-being, and most diseases are treated by panimmunity (if you're rich) or by Darwinian action (if you're not).

That being said, autopsies would have to be handled by a diversity of Skills (which actually maps well to the real world). Exactly what would have to come into play depends on a lot of things - cause of death, state of health, species of the victim (and perhaps species of the perpetrator in case of murder), etc. Indeed, simple knowledge of what world the deceased comes from might make a great deal of difference. ("This man was poisoned!" "This man's from a Hive World." "Oh. This man had healthy lungs!")

Disclaimer: Everything you are going to read is my opinion/house rule. If it did not quote a rules page, I have no official backing for it

Talking about INT or PER,

Since the IH widend the skill to diagnosis, I would not see it as an "simple body patcher skill" anymore. But it is a good question how to solve that one. The approach given in the core rule book adventure "Illumination" (p. 385) which allows to role what ever you want of the there, but giving you benefit if you know two or more could be helpfull.

Suggestion:
for a game

  • to reduce the time bye one month
  • to be able to buy off more then just one point in the time period
  • to reduce the xp-cost by 50xp per level (minimum; 50xp per point removed)

Some with "Scholastic Lore (Psychology) could assist as per the basic rules for "assistance" and could be able to "take care off" as many "patients" as a doctor with medicae could took care of in a medical case. To keep the feeling , I would not use a "Scholastic Lore (Psychology)" but would make use of priest with the Imperial Creed. After all, a good imperial citizen finds peace in the emporer, and in him alone! happy.gif

argh! I f*** up the code! Sorry for "hard reading"
