Playing a Skitarri regiment

By Plushy, in Only War

Has anyone taken a swing at this yet?

I figure it would easy to build; use the Forge World rules from Dark Heresy (especially relevant with the release of The lost Dataslate) with certain choices from regiment gen that fit well (Bionics, anyone?) and not allowing the play of most Support Specializations (I'd ban everything but Storm Troopers, really.)

The rest would be renaming. Regular Skitarii are referred to as Hypaspasists. Heavy weapons teams are Sagitarii. Artillery (usually Thudd guns instead of Hydras) are called Balisteria. Your tank units are Cataphractii. Officers are called Tribunes. You would also have your usual Enginseers mucking about. I wouldn't allow Praetorians (they're basically loyalist Obliterators) because they seem rather inhuman to me. It wouldn't be too far-fetched to have Titan Legions coming in to help at plot-critical moments and Explorators sweeping in to grab the good stuff a war might uncover.

Other than that, i do believe the Skitarii would have a higher standard of weaponry. I assume most guns would be Good-craftsmanship or better, with Plasma being slightly less wonderous and Bolt weapons being a bit more common. Maybe even make the Triplex your basic weapon?

It'd be a bit hard since there's no clear explanation of standard kit/augmentation anywhere that I'm aware of, more just that they exist and they have a command structure. If you know of any books offhand I'm happy to hear them, since I don't know that well. But ya, it seems like it'd be an easy conversion, I'd probably just replace all the 'normal' regimental benefits with a standard set of augmetics/cyber implants, and give them better equipment (at least hellgun base?) to reflect their increased access to weaponry. But ya, I don't have a great reference point, but it seems like it'd be a fun conversion.

Working on something right now. I'd arm them with a Triplex-pattern Lasgun and Guard Flak, give Common Lore (Tech) to all of them, and change the Specializations. Ban the use of Sanctioned Psykers, Orgryn, Ratlings, or Commissars. Modify the Ministorum priest to be an Electro-Priest, rename and buff everyone else. Weapon Specialist to Hypaspasist, Heavy Gunner to Sagitarii, Operator to Cataphractii, Sergeant to Tribune, Strom Trooper becomes Crimson Guard, Enginseers change little. Maybe add rules for some sort of Servitor-Handler or a Factor of the Lathes?

I would love to run a campaign with Titans as a plot device.

Hi Plushy, I think that you might find following link helpful www.tempusfugitives.co.uk/pdf/40k/Codex%20Cult%20Mechanicus.pdf It is a completely fan- but still very wellmade AM codex, with almost all entries being anchored in offiicial fluff. There is a fair bit about skiitari in there.

To play Skitarii would be to try to play a true inhuman….a logical, yet emotional killing machine.

Very, very difficult to play the role, but easy to roll in combat.

I think the true genius of DH, OW, and, to a lesser degree RT, is that they allow you to play humans, with all the emotional human nuance that we, as humans, are able to play them with. The truly fallen of Chaos, and the transhuman of the Space Marines, makes for very interesting role-playing, but loses some of the emotional tone and depth because they are so… inhuman .
