Shadow and Flame (Solo Player Living Tournament)

By juicebox, in Player community

This tournament is part of the Living Tournament system. You are welcome to read this, play the scenario, and post your results (in that order). Place well enough, and you may just end up with a Living Tournament World Ranking !

Scenario: Shadow and Flame
Deck Parameters: Open Build*
Number of Players: Solo Player

Tournament Parameters:

1) This is a Living Tournament. You may play and post results at your own pace.
2) *Open Build means you may use any legal LOTR LCG cards at your availability.
3) A valid result in this tournament consists of reporting your results (wins and losses) from 3 back-to-back games (may be spread out over as much time as you like), using the same deck for each of those 3 games. (Please observe the mulligan rule, and all other rules, from the LOTR LCG rulebook and subsequent official FAQ documents.)
4) After you post your results, the results from your 3 games will be calibrated using the RGun formula** to obtain your Weighted Result.
5) Weighted Results will then be ranked against other player’s Weighted Results, and the rankings will be updated over time as new results are posted to the thread.
6) You may play this tournament as many times as you would like (so you can try out different deck builds over time), but you can only hold one spot in the overall tournament rankings at a time (i.e. this gives you a chance to try and best your own result while only occupying one spot in the rankings).
7) Do not cheat. Just don’t. It destroys the fun and integrity of the tournament system. If you realize you have made a mistake at a later date that had serious implications for a result you had posted in the past, please make a new post in this thread drawing attention to that fact – that past result will be invalidated, and of course, you are welcome (and highly encouraged) to try again.

**The RGun formula has been designed to value both Final Score (per game) and overall Win Ratio (from your 3 games, cumulative). The formula is: (Average Score of Games Won) x (Total Games Played/Games Won). For an expanded discussion on how this formula was created, you can read the thread called Measuring Success .

What an easy task for dwarves… Played just these three games. Can't understand, why to reduce threat to 0 at the start, it should have been a bigger challenge, I think.

Sure! I played first 2 stages for 4 rounds (2+2 and 3+1) and kill Balrog in 5. I had Steward of Gondor everytime from the second round, Resourceful too, and together with a solid card draw (using Legacy of Durin, Daeron's Runes, Gleowine and even Gandalf) it really wasn't so hard to have Feint or weak ally to die every round and Erebor Battle Master + 2 Khazad + Heavy Stroke to defeat Balrog in just one round (sneaked Gandalf to shoot him and then reduce his defense to full use of HS). Thanks to low threat I didn't have to fight creatures, just Goblin Scout which I (thanks to low threat again) could optionally engage, leave undefended and slay by Dain. Main questing power were Gimli, Bifur and 2 Erebor Record Keepers, that is 10WP with bonus from Dain. I don't remember details about encounters by now, but in sum, SaF treacheries don't make too much mess (oh, Balrog is strength +3 to the end of round? does somebody defend him with a hero or what?), locations are weak and we don't have to care about other enemies. Just Counter-Spell canceled my Feint once but I had an ally in reserve.

I have to admit that I made a mistake. I played several more games and realised that I forgot to discard my hand as the effect of Counter-Spell in the third game. Score of Game 3 is so invalid, it should be probably loss. I'm going to play new 3 games. Sorry.

Here I go with new and hopefully valid results…

Heroes: Dain Ironfoot, Gimli, Bifur

Game 1 Result: 49
Final Threat Level: 5
Threat Cost of Each Dead Hero: 0
Damage Tokens on Remaining Heroes: 4
Victory Points Earned: 0
Number of Rounds Completed: 4

Game 2 Result: 45
Final Threat Level: 4
Threat Cost of Each Dead Hero: 0
Damage Tokens on Remaining Heroes: 1
Victory Points Earned: 0
Number of Rounds Completed: 4

Game 3 Result: 110
Final Threat Level: 12
Threat Cost of Each Dead Hero: 0
Damage Tokens on Remaining Heroes: 8
Victory Points Earned: 0
Number of Rounds Completed: 9

Total: 68

Deck list is mentioned above. I've only removed Peace, and Thought and added 1 more Durin's Song.

Well, I wouldn't subscribe my former statement that SaF is an easy task. I had to play 10 games at least than achieved scores in a row similar to those former ones (had to be lucky or I don't know). Game 3 was the only one in which I won even when Counter-Spell effect triggered. Early Whip of Many Thongs meant game over everytime and several games were lost just because of stupid regeneration of Balrog in refresh: my subsequent card draw was several times 2 or 3 in total. So I'd say it's hard enough.

One of my favourite scenarios. The outcomes are very uncertain and it gets very fun to play. I played through twice with this deck losing all three matches from the first playthrough and winning the complete set of the other. These are the results:

Phew! Played more than 15 games and lost about a third of them, mainly due do taking too big risks. The last three games were by far my best series.
In game two I sneaked Gandalf in the last refresh phase to lower my threat to 1 before using the action on Dark Pit.
In game three I got an early Counter Spell, so I didn't want to risk playing more than one event card (a Feint) but I was lucky and got a non-treachery, otherwise I would probably have lost the game.
