The first preview is up!

It's good, but nothing new, really. It's good to hear some of their rational for the deckbuilding. It mirrors the thoughts in the forum.

I think the things that excited me most were seeing the (presumably) final versions of things like the now-taboo Death Star dial, and focus tokens happy.gif

Simple things…

I guess this means the early demo from gencon was the final product and it got only positive feedback.

I'm psyched though, but it may be 'cause i just watched the GOUT version of the Empire strikes back. The cards still look great (the art yes, but mostly thinking about the design) and i like the focus tokens. The ffg-hype is strong in this one.

Don't worry everyone; I'm sure making more pleas to change the deck-building mechanics can totally swing the minds of the designers at this stage lengua.gif

But seriously, it's nice that they tossed in some pics of cards that haven't already been circulating. Leia looks pretty interesting with the capture mechanic, and you can see the entire "Hero's Journey" block.

Tarkin could be beastly, and like Leia, is very thematic. Even that AT-ST packs a punch in combat.

I am so excited. Can't wait to pre-order!

Heh?

Wow, yeah very cool preview and I'm glad that it looks like this is moving forward quickly. I was worried it would take a while after GenCon again and that we'd be stuck for another 6 months or more before we could start playing this.

Very excited!

YEAH! FINALLY! A PREVIEW! TWO YEARS LATER! I"M SO EXCITED!

That art… is too good.

Indeed. I wish this were the artwork on the Princess Leia sleeves. Ah well.

And man, did you guys SEE the Death Star counter? That's possibly the absolute coolest game counter EVER.

I wonder how the capturing mechanics work. It never came up in any games I played in at Gencon. Perhaps it becomes a way to get Leia back (by destroying the objective where she's captured) or some such thing?

Exactly. It thematically works really well.

Capture came up in discussion during my demo at GENCON. Didn't happen in the game but it was a mechanic he said you saw more with the Scum and Villainy deck (bounty hunters). If you captured someone then you put them on one of your objectives. I forget exactly but the next trigger is that if you destroy the objective they are on then you A) Get them back into play B) Get bonus point C) both? There was so much new stuff and it was something only mentioned in passing :-/

Do you think that because both sides have different win conditions that a tournament would play out like netrunner (2 games = 1 match, players have a turn at each side)?

I would imagine so. You had to bring a Light Side and a Dark Side deck to the tourney in the SWCCG days. Otherwise, the pairings would be too unwieldy.

Yeah but I was impling that you would play the same person in 2 games (in a row) completing one match, whereas in SWCCG you may not play the same player twice and in SWCCG you both had the same win condition.

Sigh, all this highly positive (and very respectful I might add. I wonder if ffg realise how good they've got it on this forum?) discussion there seems to be absolutely zero changes to the original mechanics presented at the demo at gencon. A little disappointing for me but not all that unexpected. I'll save my final decision of whether or not to support this game until after I read the rulebook but at this stage I'm leaning more toward netrunner as the next card game I invest in. :(

This! +1

We didn't see the rulebook yet but there aren't any changes to what was shown at GenCon'12. I had faith that FFG would reconsider the winning conditions for this game but they simply want to put dials on every single game they produce.

At least Netrunner is solid although its artwork is horrible.

I wouldn't imagine the different win conditions needing to lock you into having to play the same person twice in a row. They could do like Star Wars CCG and just make sure that you play both decks evenly, which would also balance that out.

In Netrunner, what happens if the two players split the two games?

It's in the Tournament FAQ:

Winning Matches
The winner of each match is the player with the most match
points at the conclusion of the match.
The winner of a game scores 10 match points. The loser of a
game scores match points equal to the number of agenda points
he or she had at the time the game ended.
At the conclusion of the match each player totals up the match
points he or she scored in both games, and the player with the
highest total wins the match.

Prestige
At the conclusion of each match, players are awarded prestige
based on their results. For each game a player wins during
his or her match, he or she gains 2 prestige. The winner of the
match also gains an additional 2 prestige. Thus, the potential
maximum amount of prestige that a player can gain each round
is 6. Remember that you still gain prestige for winning a game,
even if you lose the match.

Example: Kevin just finished playing his match against Jasmine,
and each player won a single game. This means that they each
gain 2 prestige. In order to figure out who won the match, they
total up their match points from both games. Kevin won the first
game (10 points) but lost the second game with only 3 agenda
points. This gives him a total of 13 match points. Jasmine lost the
first game but had 5 agenda points when she did, and won the
second game (10 points). This gives her 15 match points. Jasmine
wins the match and gains 2 additional prestige.

In the case of a tied match, players split the prestige for that
match (each gaining 1 prestige).

Also, FFG gives 65 minutes to play both games (one round = 2 games = 65min) and stop the gameplay 1 turn after the 65th minute is achieved.
It looks a bit short on time to me, I don't see a game of ADN lasting less than 40min.

EDIT: Disregard this post. Destroyed my own message due to the annoying quote mechanic.

While I understand that you don't like the win conditions, I don't see why you had faith that FFG would change them. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with the win conditions. They aren't incapable of being balanced by default, and there are other parts of the game specifically designed to support those win conditions.

While you do not like the win conditions being what they are, there are just as many if not more that do like them, or at least aren't opposed to them.

FFG has clearly shown a willingness to alter this game based on feedback. They scrapped it based on feedback. So we can only really suppose that they've gotten more positive then negative feedback on the game, including the win conditions.

And the Dial looks really nice.

On the contrary, I have heard no evidence that they scrapped it due to feedback. So far, everything FFG has said regarding the change has indicated the decision was made in-house. In other words, they changed it because they felt it wasn't the best game, not because a bunch of people complained about it.
