Play Area

By RockSoldier, in X-Wing

I hit craft stores all the time for my terrain building supplies. Most folks don't ask, but occasionally they do. Telling them you're making a table cover would probably get you the least odd looks though.

I'll probably just buy a piece of black felt and lay it across my dinning room table. Spritz it with some white paint on a tooth brush to make a star scape and call it good.

I was looking online at Joanne Fabrics for a space print. Couldn't find anything though, just black.

I am new to miniature gaming, and was wondering (especially since there is no grid to play on) if moving the pieces by accident was a problem. If it is, i was wondering if you could get some felt for the playing area and putting some stick on velcro on the bottom of the figures to get them to stick a bit.

Im not sure that this is a good idea… In my experience of using velcro on felt, the felt always tugs away from the surface slightly when removing the velcro'd item. this would likely cause nearby models to move and the play surface to become stretched and unusable… I would think a hard surface and taking care not to knock models is proabbly better…

Ok. Thanks for the advice

One of my friends bought a felt mat from here in preparation for our gaming session. I was thinking of getting a 3x3 sheet of metal and putting it under the mat. Then I was also thinking of getting some peel and stick magnet sheets and putting them on the bottom of the bases. That way if someone bumps the table, the minis shouldn't move (in theory) because of the magnets.

My only question is to those that have the game, is there space on the bottom of the bases that would allow us to use use a peel and stick magnet system or is the base hollow except for the edges?

wow, great idea. that made me think of these . They are cheap, thin so they dont add much bulk to the base, and can be cut to the exact shape of the base. The only question is if they would be strong enough to stick through the felt mat.

I was thinking if the peel and stick don't work, I can always modify the bases to use stronger magnets… Or get flat square magnets and glue the bases to the top of them. I know it'll be trial and error until I find something but that's half the fun

I originally bought a mat from Monday Knight, but had to return it. It was cut very poorly/crooked, and the paint job was medicore at best (far worse in person than in their photo). Be sure to check out their return policy before shipping, they gave me quite a hard time even though I told them I would pay for shipping both ways so they would not lose any money on the deal. I decided blank black felt was a better option for me. Some people may like it, but I did not.

I'm in the process of printing a 3x3 patch of this on vinyl.

http://www.worldworksgames.com/store/index.php?view=product&product=91

I'll post pics when it's done.

Oooooo I like! I'm curious as to how you have to print the segments out, as a printer can't print to the full edges of a piece of paper. To you have to cut out the sides removing the margins where the printer couldn't print at?

Can you cut and paste an example of their instructions to determine if I want to buy that and tell my friend we don't want to use that Monday Knight product (after seeing the picture of the item someone posted I could do a better paint job than that).

If that PDF has the option to print the entire layout, I might be tempted to buy it and take it up to a local drafting supply place and have them print it out on a E size piece of paper and then attach it to the the piece of metal we'll use for the magnet idea I mentioned earlier.

I should mention that the camera flash isn't very flattering the the Monday Knight mat - the blue stellar blends in far better under normal/natural light

I also double checked mine and it is cut reasonably well - not perfect but good enough for me as the edges will be taped up anyway (well as soon as it stops blowing a gale and raining so i can get outside and spray paint the mdf black first so i can glue and tape it all down)

It isn't as easy as it looks to make a star field on black felt - I have two failed attempts to show for that, both just never looked quite right

I have OCD so if it's not perfect it'll bug the crap out of me… And I'd rather enjoy the game rather than nit picking the cut/paint job on the felt, especially if he paid 20 bucks for it.

I am curious as to how that Uncharted Space product works, if you have the option to print out the large mat in one fell swoop than I'm going to do the printer job at a local drafting place like I mentioned.

One of my wife's friends mentioned she gets fabric from here all the time for her sewing side business and said the quality is good… Not to mention they have a few options of space materials!

Maybe I might get that fabric if my OCD doesn't drive me nuts with my friends mat he bought.

i would give Hotz Mats a try, but I heard they are extremely slow based. One few things I've read on other forums.

The PDF is just a bunch of 7.5 x 10 inch tiles, a quick run with an x-acto knife will trim it to a 36x36 surface. I hopped into a graphics program and just set it up as a huge file, I'll be printing it out in the next week or so.

Worldworks is awesome, if you've never seen them before. I'm a huge fan, cheap terrain is awesome.

I just finished a 6'x3' felt play mat myself. Going to make some terrain for it tonight!

I bought a piece of black felt at Joann Fabrics. It is 36 inches by 72 inches. So, I can fold it in half and have a 3 foot by 3 foot area for smaller games, or spread it out and have a 3 foot by 6 foot area for larger games. Looks great (since it's black it has a space feel to it), works well since it's heavy fabric, is portable since it folds/rolls up nicely, and it fits nicely on my dining room table. All for less than $9 including tax.

I already posted that I loved this idea, but I never made it out to JoAnn Fabrics. At the local store today I saw that felt is on sale for 40% off, so I'm going to get some, but when I looked at the glittery stuff I became concerned that the glitter would fall off. I don't mind too much, myself, but what if another player came along saying, "Ew, I don't want glitter all over my precious fighters." Have you found the glitter to be troublesome? Because if it is I'll just get the plain black felt instead.

I recently picked up three pre-cut (3' X 3') felt mats -- black at Michael's Craft & Hobby Store for 3.99 each. What a deal . . . and no cropping required.

My LED starfield table is almost complete. Just got to paint a few dots on the top and put the sides back on the table and it's done. Pics to follow (if I get round to figuring how to get them on here).

My son got a Lego TIE Interceptor inside a mini Death Star for his birthday today. No doubt he'll forget about the latter in a week or so so I might put it to some use as a 'background' detail.
