Direct assault vs LOW eddard stark

By Dustymcfly, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hey all so was at gmae night tonight at birds of paradise in fla. and stumbled across a problem with direct assault vs eddard stark ( lords of winter ) I attacked with robert baratheon ( kings of the storm ) he blocked with eddard so i played direct assault to change claim effect from 0 to direct assaults claim effect needless to say there were harsh words and need of rulings but of course we could not find one anywhere not even in errata. hope someone can clear this up for me, the fact that it was robert baratheon is really irrelevant just need to know if eddard reduces my events claim to zero but as i explained to this guy it REPLACES the original claim effect if i win does not matter if it is zero or not it gets REPLACED!!!

Thanks for your help in advance, will be here checking up for responses so if you know the answer dont wait to post as i will be here to see it and reply promptly

thanks again dusty mcfly

Direct Assault: Challenges: Choose 1 character with a Military and a Power icon that is attacking alone. For the duration of the challenge, that character gets +2 STR. If you win the challenge, instead of the normal claim effects, choose a non-unique location controlled by the losing opponent. Take control of that location.

I would say your interpretation is correct. The event replaces your normal claim effect. As such, it doesn't matter whether your claim is 0, 1, 2, or 12. You go by the event.

thank you for your input my friend this was quite a problem and i am sure you and i are both right but to make sure i will be waiting for anyone elses input on this matter but for now i will play this way and hope this will help anyone else encountering this problem

thank you to all…

I'm not sure what the question really is here.

  1. When Direct Assault is in play, you follow the instructions on the event card when resolving the claim effect for the challenge instead of what the rules tell you to do for that challenge type.
  2. Eddard doesn't stop the effects of the challenge from resolving while he is defending - he lowers the claim number to 0. That is, he doesn't say "you don't get claim effects, even if you win"; he says "when you go to resolve claim effects for this challenge, the number you plug in is 0."
  3. But the event doesn't refer to a claim number at all. There is no number to plug in to the resolution of the challenge effect for the event.
  4. Therefore, effects that manipulate the claim number have no practical outcome when Direct Assault is involved.

It boils down to the fact that there is a huge difference between "lower the attacking player's claim to 0" and "there are no effects for winning this challenge."

Said another way, Eddard doesn't stop claim from initiating. The effect initiates and you kill/discard/move the appropriate number of things - in Eddard's case, 0. But when Direct Assault is involved, the "appropriate number" is 1, no matter what the "claim" happens to be.

BTW: It really doesn't take that much extra time to use proper capitalization and punctuation when posting. And that little extra effort helps the readers understand your meaning so much.

Very true ktom, I apologize for my lack of punctuation and capitalization. Sometimes my punctualization ( and spelling apparently ) isn't very good, but I will do my best.

Thank for your answer as it is very helpful. I don't think I could have made it clearer, but you got it none the less. Thanks again to both of you for your help.

What was the problem with the grammar? I mean he capslocked REPLACES……twice. Asking for more than that on teh intarweb is just greedy.

I guess I'm just greedy, then.
