WFRP does not REALLY exist !?!

By flyndad, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

I am starting to think that this game, WFRP 3e, does not really exist. It is, and has been for quite some time an elusive dream that can never seem to come to fruition.

I downloaded EVERYTHING I could possibly download regarding WFRP 3e. I read ALL the reviews, and I studied every piece of information I could get my hands on,…… Then, after a few months of that I was able to come up with enough $ and ordered the core set through my local game retailer. When it finally arrived I raced down to receive my package with all the excitement and anticipation of a child waking up on Christmas morning and upon opening it right there at the store I was NOT disappointed. The books were beautiful, the little components were "cool" and the dice mesmerizing.

Over the next several months I read and re-read ALL the books, tried to stay up to date on reading the forums and ran several "test adventures" by myself to ensure I had a solid understanding of the basic rules and mechanics before I went to look for players,… Then,…. could not find any players,… soooo,…

I created a full color flyer and posted it in all the local colleges in my area,.. no response. I played a few campaigns with my daughters, 8 and 11 btw, and decided to try and attract players from my local gaming store. To enhance the look and make it look even more appealing I created a 3d forest, and actual "old dirt road" and built a very respectable looking carriage to create an impressive tabletop for the Day Late and a Shilling Short demo adventure and set it all up at my local gaming store. All the pre-gen characters with all their actions and fiddly bits were set up as well and the table looked awesome. I have done this twice and still no takers. The pathfinder table was full, the D&D table was running 8 characters and I only had 1 person even take a second glance and asked me to give an explanation, but he couldn't play and just wanted some info cause it looked so good and said he was a big "card guy" ( MTG ) and didn't have time to get into an RPG.

Desperate to play with someone older than 11 years old, I began to look at the online community and here too I have run into nothing but continued problems. First,.. I live in a rather rural area and internet service is a joke. My three options were my local cable company ( which is just pathetic. between the hours of 4pm and 2am the service is all but totally unusable ) , Verizon wireless 3g ( which would cost me about $150 - $200 per month ) and Wild Blue satellite internet ( after reading the reviews of this company anyone would be crazy to order a set-up and install ) so I have opted for the cable company in hope that I might be able to catch a game in the wee morning hours.

Having read about Fantasy Grounds on this forum I decided to give it a shot and I can't even get it to download properly and I understand this is a common problem for them, and looks like it will take DAYS of my time to get it to install and operate properly. I pray that once I do get it working that there isn't a problem loading Neil's framework into it,..

Bottom line is,.. After having spent an enormous amount of time, money, and energy into trying to play a "real" game of WFRP 3e, I am starting to wonder if someone hasn't played an elaborate and cruel practical joke on me. It has been almost a year since I first started to want to play a game and I still haven't played,……… Does WFRP 3e REALLY exist ?????

Signed,

Frustrated and flustered in the sticks,… Maptools maybe ??

I feel for you, I really do, round my way I get pretty harshly mocked for using wfrp3 over wfrp2. I do get some players, but not as many as I would like and it's certainly quite difficult to get someone else running it.

I partake in an online campaign on a (semi) regular basis and I am ALL up for organising further online wfrp fun if you are though. Fear not! You are not alone!

I would love to get together with you to discuss playing online.

I suppose the point of my post was,.. it seems that EVERY step of the way towards being able to play this game has been a rather major difficulty. I just went looking into PF and it looks SOOOOOO supported, while it feels FFG is deaf AND mute! I have two reasons for my continued pursuit of trying to play WFRP3. The first is that I have some money invested in it already, but the REAL reason is that I LOVE the background, the atmosphere, the "world" it is set in. It is the perfect balance ( imho ) of gritty reality and fantasy. Just looking at the pathfinder pics tells me it is considerably MORE high fantasy, and while my 11 year old anime fan might like that, I tend to prefer the darkness and gloomy.

I hope, for my sanity and for FFG income from my wallet, that I can get maptools OR Fantasy Grounds up and running properly within the following week. If I can then I hope to pick up a game at the google group that was recommended in the Fantasy Grounds thread on THIS forum. Wish me luck. If I can't get this going by the end of next week I will be forced to abandon WFRP3 and move to a different game. I hope that doesn't have to happen,….

Flyndad: where do you live, someone might see this and if they are near you maybe you guys can set something up. I'm near Portland,OR and there was a father on the gamer meetup forums here talking about wanting to game with his two daughters, I responded to him but never got anything back. Thats such a rare gaming demographic, could that be you?

I am in pretty much the same situation as you. I have bought all of the products so far released, but have no-one to play with! I recently heard about an online community called OWL (Olde World League) which plays WFRP3 online using Fantasy Grounds 2 or Maptools to play and there are a few games going on each week. I have so far taken part in 3 online games and have loved every one of them, everyone has been really helpfull in teaching me how to use Fantasy Grounds - I haven't used maptools yet. There are people from all over the world involved and so times of games are different and so there should be some that suit you best.

If you fancy looking at it the web site is http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/the-old-world-league join obsidian portal (free) and favourite the Olde World League and introduce yourself and people will help with anything you need.

The games are set up in a google group found at https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/wfrp3-virtual-rpg so join that too and you will soon be playing online games.

If you have any questions just ask and I'll try to help.

Hope to see you in the Warhammer world soon.

Gazery

I suppose a Father playing a tabletop RPG with his two daughters is a pretty rare dynamic, but I live near Birmingham Alabama. Maybe if I can get this up and running soon we could still take an online romp through the Old World ??!??

@ Gazery

I am on the google group. It is my understanding that FG has been having problems with their latest version when XP users try to load it. I hope they rectify this issue soon cause I am sooooooo ready to decapitate some chaos followers :) I have an email in to their support people and hope to hear something soon. Thanks VERY much for your offer of help,.. I may just take ya up on it soon,….

Though this might be different for other people, in my own experiences, getting people interested in anything at all having to do with Warhammer is an uphill battle. This is because a lot of people have already heard of Warhammer and, though they've never actually engaged with the setting or tried to play the wargame, they have already made up their minds about what it is and isn't.

Several words come to people's minds when you mention Warhammer. Two of them, at least, are grimdark and expensive. They look at the setting, see the very outside of the setting explained to them, and think it's either silly or too dark/depression/gritty. They also know, even if they've never really looked into it, that GamesWorkshop sells those miniatures for a premium.

So for me, at least, it seems like people have already defeated themselves when it comes to Warhammer. Not everyone, of course, is like that; certainly not the group of people on these forums! But that's possibly a reason as to why you have no interest.

That said, while I never got involved with it myself, the Olde World League is a fantastic community and I'd advise you to sign up with them for some online gaming!

Flyndad,

I can understand your frustrations with finding players - that's why I created the ruleset for FG2 so that I could find some players myself!

If you are having issues with FG2 or my ruleset, then PM me and I will help as much as I can.

Don't try to attract RPG gamers but non-gamers who would be interested in a social experience related to a fantasy setting. All my game groups are basically build from scratch with friends and friends of friends with little to no RPG experience - I'd they really like it!

Gamers with Pathfinder or D&D are unlikely to start to invest time in Warhammer as they already have they beloved systems. It's like trying to hit on married women instead of going at single girls.

Neil, I don't have the 20 bucks for a licence, care to pony up the dosh for me?gui%C3%B1o.gif

Seriously though, if you want to e-mail me and we can set up a maptools session it's ALMOST like playing it face to face.

I feel your pain, though I have been able to find a group to play (I GM), I still would love to play some Warhammer!

I'm a member of the old world league, but finding games/times I can make that aren't full has been difficult.

If you're interested in running a Warhammer game via FG, I'm in!

As a face to face game, this might not sit well, but you could try running PF in the Warhammer world and hook players that way…

Just a thought. ;-)

I think this comes down to a shortage of GMs and games running each week. I know a few are busy with real life and can only setup a game once in a while, so the ones that do fill up fast. My advice is if a game is full, put yourself down as a 'reserve', as people have to drop out all the time.

My impression at the moment is that there are pretty much no games happening during US weeknights, which is a downer. But that just needs some active US GMs really; at some point someone may need to step up. But these things take time and patience, the group has only been going for about 3-4 months after all.

I started of on Warhammer when I bought a few novels about 8 years ago. Since then I got into Warhammer Fantasy Battles (only small armies though) and then 2 years ago I purchased WFRP 3e. I loved the whole thing straightaway! But….. I have only ever played as a GM with my son who is nearly 13. Likes the stories of Gotrek and Felix :-)

The thing is my work doesnt ever seem to allow me to join online games. They are always at the wrong time for me or my timezone, which is GMT+1.

So its only ever been my son and me. He couldnt even convince his friend's to join. I even bought the PDF version of Players Guide from drivthrurpg so I couid print off the all the careers, rules and stuff. Nothing! We tried to play as 2 actual players and have random encounters but it always seemed to fail dismally :-(

Anyway just wanted you to say, I know exactly how you feel. I do really enjoy playing with my son but I would like to be an actual player, not a GM!

Hope you manage to find a game out there :-) Good luck!

The advice I have received on this thread has been GREAT! Thanks for the help guys,..

I suppose what I was trying to get at in my original post was something to the effect that, it seems to me that while the "world" of Warhammer is (imho) the best, and the new mechanics of 3e are (inho) excellent, the company ( FFG ) has FAILED miserably in their approach to selling their product. It baffles my mind on sooo many levels,…

1. They release a game with a totally new mechanic and in doing so HAD to know that it NEEDED to be explained VERY carefully and in great detail so that it could be understood,… and then they release the rulebook that exists in the core set. While it was beautiful to look at, it is horribly written.

2. I just don't understand this company ?!?,… I walk into my local game stores ( 5 in my area ) and in ALL of them I see the same thing,.. they ALL have a D&D section, then you can walk over to the Pathfinder section, then you can walk over to the WARHAMMER section, but there isn't ANY WFRP section ?!? They have all the boxed armies and rulebooks for Fantasy Battles, and they have all the 40k stuff, and they have the minis, but you are lucky if they have anything on WFRP. Maybe 1 campaign set, or a 2nd edition book, but that is it ??!?? I know the business isn't the same but I can distinctly remember working at a music store in my teens and the owner complaining that he sometimes HAD to carry certain models of certain instruments if he wanted to keep his dealership of the brand. This went for companies as large as Fender and Gibson, and as small as little custom shops that were local. If you wanted to be a Gibson dealer you HAD to have at least 1 Les Paul on the wall. Can FFG and GW not get together to do this?!? "Wanna sell Fantasy Battle stuff?,.. Then you have to keep a Core set, in stock, in a POS display of some sort." Maybe not exactly like this, but you get my meaning,… This would help to produce a "presence".

3. I do not know if it is FFG incompetence or GW overly litigious paranoia regarding their IP, but their lack of vocal, loud, visual support of their own product leaves me literally bereft of words,…. THEY CAN'T EVEN GET ON THEIR OWN FORUMS TO SAY "HEY ALL YOU WARHAMMER FANS, THE DICE PACKS SHOULD BE HERE IN A FEW WEEKS" !!!!! Instead, they will let the fans imaginations run away with negativity about the continuation of the line, allow the price of a dice pack to run up OVER $20, causing many who may have been interested in looking further into WFRP to RUN,… who wants to spend big bucks on a game that isn't produced anymore, right ?!?

4. This one is along the same lines as #3, and I am certain I am way off base here, BUT,…. In my mind FFG should immediately get on the phone to the "leaders" in the "fan" community and BEND OVER BACKWARDS to do whatever they can to support these guys,… I would have 2 guys on a plane in an instant to fly over to meet with Mr. Gitzman, have a sit down meeting with him and ask " WHAT DO YOU NEED??,.. how can we help support your resource site,.. How can we help aid and support your pod casts?? Here is a check for all the amazing, hard, and professional work you have done, and here is another to keep it going and make it even better,…….. Then I send those guys over to Neil ( who put together the FG framework ) and say the same thing to him,…. from there it would be off to the Liber Fanatica guys,.. etc, etc. I am certain I am leaving out many others. GEEZZZZE,…. just the FG stuff is like shooting yourself in the foot,… FG supports the SALE of your product MORONS !!!! CALL THEM !! Put their link in BOLD smack in the middle of the WFRP "official" website. Underscore it with "it's EASY to find folks to play with,… click here", then release a "package" ( in working with Neil) that has ALL the official cards and rules and such for FG,.. If I am not mistaken, YOU COULD EVEN SELL THIS "FG" PACKAGE ! Stop forcing your customers to be "pro-active" and have to hunt and search and struggle,…. The additional sales, to an even larger fan base, would more than cover the cost of a VERY small team of marketing professionals that knew what they hell they were doing. ( please see PF here )

I guess I should stop, as this is turning into more of a rant than I had initially intended. I just have a gut instinct, based on my own experience with "getting into" the game, that this game could be SOOOOOOOOO much "bigger" than it is if it were not so poorly managed.

Before it is all said and done "I WILL PLAY A GAME OF WFRP 3e by Sigmar !!!!" even WITHOUT your help FFG,… and in NO SMALL PART due to the fan "leaders" out there,… Leaps and bounds better than the current leadership at FFG,…………………

Amen,……………

This.

Let's focus on spreading good words on WFRP 3 and you'll find some Players eventually gui%C3%B1o.gif

Karma's right that we (The FG2/Maptool Google Group - Old WorldLeague) are in need of GMs, especially U.S. GMs. We have a few Europeans GMs, and many Europeans players, but the U.S. isn't very much represented. There are U.S. players, but so far, I believe I am the only U.S. GM. Unfortunately, I have been very busy with real life this August, and September isn't looking much better.

For those players who are actually looking for a game, and finding announced games already full, go ahead and post on the google group your desire to play, and the timezone/time you can make it. Don't wait for a GM to announce a game! Sometimes, it only takes the fact that a bunch of players are willing to play for a GM to say, hell yes, lets do it. Also, as Karma pointed out, even if a game is full, post yourself as reserve. There are often drop out, and for a GM, it's somewhat sad to run an online game with less than 4 players… sad because he/she knows it would be much more fun to have a full group.

Flyndad, I feel for you. I am also in the country, same time zone as you are, with 3G internet (Indeed, it's not cheap). I am sorry to hear that FG2 is difficult to install for you. I'll be happy to help you, and you can pm/email me here or on the Google Group. I'll be happy to connect with you through Skype and walk you through installing FG2, and installing Neil's ruleset and my library.

Cheers

I will be MORE than happy to GM some games when I get up an running. Before I GM I want to be fully familiar with the FG program AND the basic mechanics. Although I have run Day Late and Eye for an Eye, I did so with my VERY young daughters and I am certain we were leaving ALOT of things off. ( It is often difficult to GM AND keep track of all the player stats and conditions at the same time.)

As it stands now I did get the demo version of FG to install, I have loaded Neil's framework and I have loaded your latest module, ( or is it called a library?) but I don't think I have placed all the various files in the right place. I have put the .mod files where they are supposed to go, but am still uncertain as to where the rest of the files are to be placed i.e. tokens, definitions, classes, graphics, managers, and the base.lua file. Some of the things that I still can't access are character creation ( the window comes up, but is empty,… nothing to click on to create a character) and character tokens. The NPC character sheets are there, along with their respective tokens, but nothing for the players.

As a side note, let me say that I am truly humbled by the leaders in the fan community. Almost to the point of feeling guilty. The amount of time, effort, energy, creativity, and plain flat out hard work that you and Neil and Jesse and Jay ( and many others I am certain to be leaving out) have put into this game is awe inspiring. And you all have done so without any compensation other than the occasional thank you and thumbs up from the players who have the benefit of all this amazing work. My hat is off to ALL of you and I am sincerely grateful. It it were not for the leaders in the fan community I am almost positive that I would have scrapped wfrp3, chalked up my investment as a mistake, and gone down a different "uhem" <clears throat> "Path".

But I digress,.. Once I have everything in the right place and working properly I plan to watch the videos again and play with it for a few days. At that point I would love to get in on a game as a player ( both to enjoy Finally playing a game, and to learn the system and software in an actual setting ) Once I feel comfortable I think I could GM an online 4 or 5 hour session every other week.

Thanks again for all your help,

Flyndad,

It sounds like you have unzip/extracted the ruleset file which is something you do not need to do. All you need is to download the .PAK file and copy that file in the Rulesets folder of the FG2 Data Directory. The same applies for the library .MOD file, except you copy this to the Modules folder.

You need no other files and you should not need to unzip or extract them.

Flyndad, Neil already explained what you may have been doing wrong in installing his ruleset and my library. Try what he explains, and if you still have difficulties in running FG2, PM me with a day/time and your Skype handle (or post on the Google Group all that info) and I can help you to make sure through Skype that everything works. I am in Virginia, Easter Standard Time, but very flexible with my schedule.

Dont worry, we'll get you to play WFRP3 :)!

Cheers

this problem is not exclusive to WHFRP3. its hard to find the kind of time as an adult to run any sort of tabletop game. i continue to buy rpg products based on the the free time i had when i was 12 when the reality is i wont play most of them. i just tell myself im a collector to justify the habit :)

if you need new players ask women to play. Most girls really enjoys rpgs if someone takes the time to teach them how to play. I have 3 women and one man in my pathfinder group and its been awesome. the girls dont make annoying nerd culture references during my scene descriptions, they dont bog the game down with rules debates and edition wars. they smell nice and bring food without being asked. they are very concerned about playing "correctly" which i find quite endearing and i can run the most stereotype cliche fantasy scenarios that an RPG vet would roll their eyes at and its new and exciting to them.

as a side bonus its strangely much easier to convince guys who are the fence about playing in your game to come if there are girls there :)

WOW,.. I really hate to look stupid but,……

I can't seem to find a " Data Directory" or a " Ruleset folder" for Fantasy Grounds. My path to get there in xp is: start, program files,Fantasy grounds, and then I see an Apps data folder. I assume this is the apps data directory? When opening the "apps data folder" it contains : cache, docs, modules, utilities, campaigns, extensions, portraits and then a few text documents. I do not see a "ruleset" folder and none of these folders contain a "ruleset" folder. … now I did see a file in the modules folder labeled 3.5e basic rules.

I should mention again that I still have the demo version, and that I have all the stress and fatigue tokens, and coins, and the party sheet, and all the mini card images. I can load Day Late and see the maps and NPC's ect. I just can't see any character creation or any pre-gen characters.

So my v3.pak is sitting on my desktop just waiting for you to tell me where to stick it. As I am sure, you are ready to do by now,..gran_risa.gif

Got it and played it so it does exist.

My group enjoyed some parts of it, but the amount of cards and widgets got in the way and they didn't much care for them.
We had played 2nd Edition, and now play Black Crusade which is similar. They just seem to prefer more paper based systems.(yeah sorry, that old chesnut - but it was what my group felt).

It is frustrating to me as I love WFRP and have all the supplements and adventures and would love to get a new campaign going.

I agree that it needs more support and explaination as it can be overwhelming at first. particularly for players more used to other pen and paper systems.
Much more worked examples of basic combat and using the various dice etc. would have helped a lot.

Regarding games Workshop though the situation is complex. They seem to have a love hate relationship with the RPG side of it. Three versions and the Dark Heresy to Black Crusade range shows it is profitable, but they continued to bring it in house, then outsource it in waves with no real vision or idea as to what to do with this red headed stepchild of the tabletop game. Same with Warhamemr Online, and the various oher PC games like Space Marine and Dawn of War.

But outsourced it is - so is none core. So does not appear in Games Worshop store, and recieves brief mentions at best in White Dwarf. But it is their IP, thier baby. Maybe if they acknowledged its exisrtence, spent some more time on it, and helped it grow that support would open up a lot of table top players to the RPG's. And they get their cut of the profits from it too. I think they fear it to be mutualy exclusive i.e every RPG sale is a lost army sale - but that's not the case. Half my group have tabletop armies and the other half have never been interested in tabletop at all - so some of us have both whereas the others would not have bought anything but for the RPG's. No sales lost there. If anything cross selling creates a stonger and more atractive brand. Books and armies go toether fine in the GW stores. RPG and Computer games add to the mix. Plug all as a coherent whole and more chance of cross sales.

Re: #2.

That is really the responsibility of the game store, not FFG's fault. There are enough WFRP3 products to get their own section amongst the RPG stuff. My local game store has a WFRP3 section.

If I had more time, I'd attempt to run an online group. However, my longstanding bi-weekly WFRP3 group night (I GM), plus bi-weekly boardgame nights, really just sucks up all my spare time. I don't have the energy any more to run a second game, even online.

Dead funny, I do that
