For those who have the models…

By I. J. Thompson, in X-Wing

(There's clearly no starmap included in the base game, so I guess I have to stop screaming about that [which I'm sure many will be thankful for]. So, what else can I scream about? Ah! How about this:)

All the models, while they certainly look great, aren't posed very dynamically. This may be necessary (I'm not screaming, really!), but it struck me that, if the 'stem' that emerges from the bottom of the ship and connects to the stand was on a ball joint, players would be able to 'tilt' their fighters in whichever way they liked for a more dynamic look. Of course that's out of the question for the first two sets, but it could be a fun feature in the future.

Would such a thing be possible, with these models?

[clarification: I'm not whining or moaning, I've preordered every ship - I'm just trying to think of things that would make the game even cooler! cool.gif ]

The giggest problem with a gimbal/ball mount right at the mini would be for TIEs. In WoW/G those planes have wings that go out. The vertical "wings" of the TIEs would get in the way if the joint was right at the mini. Probably the better solution is to modify a peg to act as the gimbal to get it under the wings of the TIE. Then you wouldn't have to make any modifications to ships.

I'm really not bothered by static models. For me the game is about how the pieces move about the table rather than how they look (but I'm the opposite with my 40K and Heavy Gear armies). But, that said, if you really wanted to modify the ships you could.

Perhaps using some kind of bendable material to replace the post. My experience with the ball and socket type joins is they eventually wear to the point where they're too loose to hold the model up. But using some kind of wire that you can bend and/or rebend on the fly might be a good way to do this without having to do any work to the base or the socket on the model.

Hmm, I didn't know this, and it makes me feel much better about not getting this feature from the get-go. Flat, static poses it is! cool.gif

I'm interested in doing this (ball joint) as well as elevation rules. I realize that this is outer space and they should be flying around in 3D space like the movies, but I still will probably add some height rules, especially in Death Star trench scenarios…

The aftermarket stuff for WoW was ball and ring magnets, not a socketed plastic ball.
