Board Size 4th Ed. vs Revised 4th Ed.

By el67che, in Talisman

I have a question brought on by the new Dungeon expansion, which I guess fits on a corner of the board...

Is the game Board for the Revised 4th ed the exact same size as the the Black Industries 4th Edition Board. I have the BI one and got the upgrade pack....I'd hate to think these board expansions are designed for a differently sized board than mine.....

The revised 4th edition board is slightly larger than the BI 4th edition board.

Whoa, good grief, then I'll definitely stick with my patched BI board. Just the wife and I played last night. With only two people we kept have to get up to double check space or card texts across that long board. Can't imagine dealing with one that's even a little larger still.

The 4.5e one is slightly larger than the 4e one, but only by a maybe an inch iirc?

Though, if the Dungeon board is supposed to line up perfectly with spaces on the main board I guess that could still cause some issues possibly.

I think that only perfectionists have a problem with that. gui%C3%B1o.gif or maybe not gui%C3%B1o.gif

So... i am happy that i have buy the revised one...( but come on, if it is a inch, it's not worth i think to buy a whole new set for that.

I took some comparison shots for people to see for themselves.

The Revised board IS bigger, but if you look at the actual relative positioning of the Ruins it is only slightly off, so I do not think it will present a problem for the Dungeon at all.

Wow,

The revised board is on 2 sides a lot bigger than the one from black gates. I did not know that.

Why did they do that. Everyone wants to make the board smaller, but it's gets bigger and bigger lengua.gif And with the dungeon expansion, it's getting wider lol gran_risa.gif

I am happy that i have a big table lol gran_risa.gif

I think FFG might be shooting for ending up a 1:1 scale eventually! gran_risa.gif

Guess it's some sort of FFG-standard or someting as it is the same size as the Arkham Horror board (the only FFG games I have, so far)... both, however, are bigger than they need to be (and barely fits my table as it is, can't fit any expansions there :( )

Yeah - that is a general criticism of FFG - but only a minor one - large boards look **** impressive, but when you have enough supplements out for the game, as with Arkham Horror, then you end up taking over a room. I often play on the kitchen table at my house - and we have had to balance cards on chairs, work surfaces, even in a box on top of the oven - then it's "where did we put the cards for such and such?" followed by frantic searching.

With Talisman of old using so many supplements (but hopefully hundreds of adventure cards eventually!) I can honestly see myself having to invest in a larger kitchen table, or just scrabbling around on the floor gran_risa.gif

Lol gran_risa.gif

I hope you are kidding, but you are not gran_risa.gif

How can you play like that in a kitchen partido_risa.gif

If this goes on, you find a card inside the oven ! LOL ( then i hope you have not turned the oven on, for making some food, because it's late)

If you play talisman on daylight, the evening comes quicker than you think, and you forget to eat. LOL gran_risa.gif

Just revisiting this thread briefly to post news that I have recieved a comparison shot from FFG that I will be adding to Talisman Island this weekend showing the relative positions of the Ruins compared with the Dungeon board which shows that there is no issue at all, whether you use the Revised 4th Edition board or the original 4th Edition version. So that's good news! gran_risa.gif

Though I am sure FFG realised that it would have been foolish to make an Upgrade pack and then make an expansion that would not be compatible!

More tomorrow...

In fact, the image has been posted over at BoardGameGeek along with a comparison of deck size AND a larger image of the back of the box for you inquisitive types!

You can see that the size of the board really isn't an issue at all...

I must say that the black gates version fits better than the revised version, but it's not a problem for me.

But look at that close artwork. sorpresa.gif

It's ten times better than the main board gran_risa.gif

If each edition and revision expands the size of the board, how long before "live-action" Talisman becomes the only way to play? I suppose you'd have to rent a field in the country, terraform it with a heck of a lot of landscaping, and get a set of dice the size of oil drums.

We must all get Ping Pong tables..... Or sit on the floor? The 3D board is larger still. I am just going to nesle up the dungeon board to it though. Maybe put it up on a 1" Styrofoam base painted and carved appropriately.
