Infinite Pain Tokens (Dark Eldar)

By Naviward, in Rogue Trader

Considering the excessive hassle that would be involved in getting your Dark Eldar ressurected by a Haemonculi, I don't think it would be against the spirit of the rules to let the players go for it. Because it's going to be a group effort afterall. Though depending on in-game circumstances and the whims of the GM, they might just let you defer payment until after the Dark Eldar is back up and breathing.

Of course, that still leaves everyone the whole adventure of getting to that point.

I'm even thinking of having my Dark Eldar character get one of the other party brought back, if they should die. After all, it should hardly be a test of a Haemonculi's skills to bring back as paltry a life form as the mon-keigh. Heh heh heh.. Trueborn cunning at its finest.

And sorry for snapping before Navi, got overdefensive of the game, but it's been my experience that when people start obsessing over idiot/abuse proofing every single rule and rule combination, the game can get bogged and, and just have the fun sucked out of it. Soon enough you'll have people pushing for a 100% simulationist style optimization focus be put on the game (most of the other changes are great, it's really just this ****, with Exalted).

The Haemunculous could even act as an agency of Fate Point resurrection.

If the PC DE dies in such a way that no reasonable way to survive it could be explained (ex. fell into a ships fusion core during a duel on the catwalks in the engineering decks), but has Fate Points to spend……then he had a pact with a Haemunculous to bring him back and left a cell sample. The PC shows back up shortly via Webway portal looking none the worse off for the experience.

If the PC dies and does not have any Fate Points left to spend….well, Haemunculi are known to be somewhat fickle creatures. So rather than resurrection, you are brought back, tortured, and turned into a Grotesque, trapped in a Talos, or another hideous end. Roll a new character!

I would require the Dark Eldar player to give me a reason as to how he will pay for this resurrection. Wealth comes in fourm of slaves, I could see the character having an I.O.U but it would be wise to handle the matter as quickly as possible. This would set up an RP session that would involve rest the party. As if the rest don't agree and find worthy slaves, then the Dark Eldar player would have to roll a standard character, Ships morality level is going to drop as the Dark Eldar becomes an NPC, kidnaps as many deck workers he/she can and slips out on the next planet through a web way portal. The entire PC group would then gain Hatred (Dark Eldar).

Cause & Effect.

The Pain Token thing really comes down to how the GM wants to run things.

I for one, who owns the Dark Eldar codex and has read Path of the Renegade, would not allow a Dark Eldar character to gain Pain Tokens from repeated abuse of those poor space puppies. They'd gain them for the first few times, maybe even enough to gain that Fate Point, but no more beyond that.

Why? Because the Eldar, especially the Dark Eldar, are fickle and bore easily. Punching puppies might be fun for them for a while, but eventually there is no satisfaction after the 10th puppy is abused in the exact same way.

Now maybe if the Dark Eldar player became creative in exactly how they tortured said puppies, I'd allow him / her to gain more Pain Tokens, but this would require good roleplaying and probably suitable skill checks (like Intimidate, Chem-Use, Interrogation etc.).

As for the Homonculus resurrection thing, I'd probably require the burning of a group's Profit Factor in order to gain their services, and a trip to Commoragh or an arranged pick-up. I'd even allow non-Eldar characters to do it if they have the right trade deals or contacts with the Dark Eldar (such as what they might get at the end of Soul Reaver).

However, then it comes down to if the players think its worth burning the group's PF to resurrect just one player's character, especially considering that player could just roll a new one.

Also, I'm pretty sure there's some rules for Homonculus resurrections in Soul Reaver that also causes the loss of some stats when it happens, and also a random 'upgrade' of sorts, so I'd be inclined to use those rules too.

Just a quick update, got a lovely response from FFG about this question, fits in well with what people have been talking about here. I love the comment about possibly being able to cause pain through insults and emotional suffering, very dark eldar.

Essentially, this question falls into the realm of the Game Master's discretion over what is and is not appropriate. As the Power Through Pain Trait describes on page 98, an Explorer with this Trait "gains a single Pain Token whenever one or more living creatures… are killed, suffer non-lethal Critical Damage, suffer Blood Loss, fail a Fear or Pinning Test, or are otherwise subjected to excruciating pain (gaining a single Pain Token after a set amount of time, depending on the nature and intensity of the pain, at the GM's discretion) ."

In the flurry of deadly combat, when a Dark Eldar's life rests on the decisions made in mere seconds, a single Action can earn a Pain Token. However, the Dark Eldar are capricious creatures, easily bored even by their own depravities, and so, as the parenthetical notes, it falls to the Game Master to determine what warrants a Pain Token over the course of days, hours, or even minutes. Repeatedly injuring a helpless enemy might be enough to stave off the thirst of the soul for a short time, but it would rapidly grow stale to even the most singularly uncreative Dark Eldar. The parenthetical follows the last entry in the list, but applies to all of them. Especially when outside of life-and-death battles, all Pain Token gains are made at the Game Master's discretion.
This keeps scenarios like the one you proposed from arising unless the Game Master allows it, and also allows a creative Dark Eldar to inflict harm in fresh new ways—a particularly cutting word or insult might, under the right circumstances, render a Pain Token from the emotional suffering of its target, or sabotaging the fortunes of a rival Rogue Trader could cause him distress akin to physical injury. The GM should encourage the players to be creative in this regard, but should also keep in mind that ultimately, all such decisions fall to his or her best judgement.
