Removing Icons and Shadow card timings

By MrFixit, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

So I once more need help from you guys :)

First off assuming a challenge has been announced by the attacker by declaring an attacking character and the attacked player.

There is a player action window after this in which the defender manages to remove the corrisponding Icon on the character. What happens to the challenge i.e. how is it resolved. Is defending it still needed?

Secondly. I believe the shadow card mechanic was introduced after the core set was released so we keep on having some troubles with the timings.

Do i get to bring a shadow card out of shadows in the dominance phase BEFORE dominance is awarded?

As i can only play shadow cards at the beginning of each phase (unless their text states otherwise) is this done before everything else???

What if there are passives in play saying "at the beginning of the phase…"

Hope you can help out…

greets and thanks

Challenge icons are only checked when the character is declared as an attacker or defender. Removing a challenge icon after the character is declared doesn't remove the character from the challenge. The character is still participating in the challenge, and still counts its STR at challenge resolution (unless you play something like The Only Game that Matters along with the icon removal). See also FAQ p.23, the first question of the actual "Frequently Asked Questions" portion.

Yes, certainly. A tried and true strategy for pulling off a surprise Dominance win.

Bringing a card out of shadows happens before any "beginning of the phase" passives/responses.
