Dagmer Cleftjaw and Captured Cog

By Tygrou, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hello everybody.

I was asking myself this simple question : what is the STR value in dominance phase of a Captured Cog if you also control Dagmer Cleftjaw ? In my opinion the "logical" value would be 6 (4 for the Cog + 2 given by Dagmer), but the wording of the cards let me think that these are 2 incompatible permanent effects, so the STR value would be 0 because the 2 effects cannot be applied at the same time…

If it is really 0, is there a chance that an errata/ruling will come to improve this ?

Thanks in advance.

Imagine that a card had two separate lines of text. One says "this character gets +2 STR while attacking." The other says "this character gets +4 STR while attacking." Since they are separate effects, you'd apply each of them separately when the character was attacking for a total of +6 STR. Heck, you don't even have to imagine this. Look at the new Free Cities locations. Like Volantis, which says "Lower the cost of the first OOH Greyjoy you play by 1. Lower the cost of the first Mercenary you play by 1." So, if the first OOH Greyjoy you play is also the first Mercenary you play, the cost is lowered by 2, right?

Effectively, you get one modifier to the dominance count per ability, not one modifier to the dominance count per warship.

The two are not incompatible. The effects are separate, so they resolve separately.

Sure, but in this case, the abilities are not worded as modifiers, they're worded as absolutes, and my assumption is that this is what threw the OP.

So let's pretend there's a stack (there actually is a stack for conflicting effects, so it's not so pretend).

I choose Dagmer to resolve first, counting 2 Strength from Dagmer for my warship.

I choose Cog to resolve second, counting 4 Strength from Cog.

I have 6 total strength added to dominance from Dagmer and Cogs effect?

You got it. The effects are not giving the Cog 2 STR and 4 STR. Dagmer counts the number of Warships and his ability counts +2 STR per Warship toward dominance. The Cog counts itself and adds +4 STR toward dominance. It is not saying that the Cog HAS this STR toward dominance. It is saying that you are counting STR toward dominance using these 2 abilities.

Putting this into a different perspective:

Pretending dominance is a person named Adam.
Pretend Dagmer says "Give dominance $2 for each warship you own." and only control the Cog.
Pretend the Cog says "Give dominance $4."

By following those rules, you'd give $2 to Adam because you control 1 Warship and $4 to Adam because the Cog says so. So Adam would collect $6.

I sent the question to FFG and Damon answered "6 STR".
