Item Prices

By Collinsas, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire Beta

Not really an issue with the book, just a small minutia thing; but do the costs of ships and equipment in the book seem a rather low to anyone else. Not really a big nit-pick, but more an item for discussion.

Examples being:
-A set of ‘Stormtrooper armour’ costing around 2500, vs. where it should sit at around 8000.
-A ‘YT-1300 Light Freighter’ is priced in the book at 110,000, where on Wookieepedia it sits at 100,000 new and 25,000 used.
-The CR90 Corellian corvette from this book is 2,400,000, vs. the established price of 3,500,000 new and 1,500,000 used.

Post Script: In tracking down Wookieepedia’s source for these prices; they apparently are from WOTC’s Star Wars D20 saga edition, so take that for what you will…

Worth checking the WEG sources?

Big ships varying in price isn't all bad, but stuff like the stormtrooper armour… well, when its less than half earlier prices I wonder.. depends on what beard they give in this incarnation of the game vs earlier games.

I always thought prices for ships in previous RPGs was a bit low in any case. Increasing costs across the board is a good thing, I think. Especially if the group begins the game with a ship anyway.

Storm Trooper armor should cost 8k? Doesn't Luke only get around 2k for his speeder? And doesn't he say they could almost buy a ship for 10k? Is Storm Trooper armor, that can't even stop a blaster bolt, really almost as expensive as a space ship?

I would think it worth a fair amount more as it contains a fair number of features aside from the ablative plates that include but are not limited to the following:

-A full communication suit with IFF.

-A set of Advanced NBC Filters and full environmental seal with 20 minutes worth of emergency oxygen.

-Holographic Display systems (That includes: a full HUD displaying targeting reticule and weapon information, Multi-Frequency Targeting and Acquisition System, Automatic polarizing and anti-flash blinding lenses).

-Powered gloves to aid in Close combat.

And yet Luke could hardly see out of the helmet. :P

I think Luke was using hyperbole to express his frustration at the outrageous sum that Han was charging.

Yeah, but Luke wasn't trained to use the armor, so none of those bells and whistles did him any good :)

Remember that buying Stormtrooper is illegal. Something to consider.

Though, isn't the armor in the book Laminate armor, and not actual Stormtrooper armor? So that could also be part of the price discrepency. If you're just getting an armor made from the same material, and not actual Stormtrooper gear with all the fancy tech inside.

Seems like some variation is to be expected considering that there are two or three very different games by different design teams many years apart.

I am willing to say that that might indeed be the case, but if that were so, it would be a bit incongruent with the item’s description above the cost table. The item description details a suit of ‘Laminate (Stormtrooper Armour)’, with its attached utilities, including the ability to upgrade it into a set of weatherized armour (snowtrooper/sandtrooper gear) and not simply a set of ‘Laminate armour’.

I don't think that compatabilitiy with other RPGs is a goal. Nor should it be. I think that for the cost Laminate armor is a bit high honestly. All you get over padded armor is 3 hardpoints.

FWIW if the ST armor normally includes an Advanced Optical Suite, that feature brings the cost up to 5k and uses one of those hardpoints.

Think most of the prices on Wookieepedia originated from the WEG books. I have noticed some discrepancies though, I am not sure where these conflicts come from..

They actually created a ton of what is considered the expanded universe. When Timothy Zahn was hired on to created the Thrawn books. Lucas Arts sent him a pile of WEG books and told him he should talk and work with these guys. WEGs also had access to the official Lucas Arts Info database for years.
