The Pro-EotE Thread!

By Shakespearian_Soldier, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire Beta

As the forum seems to be crammed full of anti-EotE threads so far, I thought that I'd start a thread engineered towards positive thinking, and pro-SWR discussions. XD A place where those who have/have ordered the books can talk about what they're looking forward to, mechanics or designs that interest them, or things that they're keen to see happen with the game line in the future.

Let's start showing our support guys!

I'm in!

I just finished the Dice and Character Creation sections last night. VERY impressed. The dice system is one of the coolest things I have seen in a while for an RPG. It follows a lot of what they have been doing in boardgames recently (i.e. Age of Conan or WoW Boardgame). I guess it has been used in the Warhammer RPG also, but I am afraid I know nothing about that.

There is a real cool destiny point system too where Players can use them like Action Points, but they can do more. Players can use them to slightly alter the story in some way. The example they give in the book is, the players land on a planet with no atmosphere and they decided to use one to say "Good thing we packed those breathers." Another thing that is cool, is the "Light Side" Destiny point becomes a "Dark Side" one that the GM uses.

They also have purposely tossed out maps and miniatures… which I have felt has mired down my group's gaming in Pathfinder. Everyone mulling of positions and debating. It is like becoming a boardgame. I didn't need any of this nonsense when I started playing in the 1980s. We used our minds for all of it. Nice to see something wanting to get back to the basics.

So far I am really digging the ideas behind the game.

EDIT: There is also a great write of of a first time play through HERE

Same here. It's Star Wars so the hate trolling is expected I suppose. I gladly paid for the beta as did the rest of my gaming group. $40 for a Star Wars RPG we can enjoy and have fun with right now? Seems reasonable to me. From what I've read so far, the system looks pretty fun and if its not, well, my group is a grizzled vet group. We'll have no problems house ruling whatever we don't like. The point is, Star Wars RPG with a new take on something we all love is something to look forward to.

Agreed. Everyone gets all crazy when it comes to Star Wars… me included. I guess that is why my reaction was "YES… I will take one!"

I have a group of friends who live states apart and can only meet to play a few times a year. Earlier this year I took a bunch of info from old WEGs stuff… and cobbled together something with the new open source D6, along with the "success dice" idea from DC Universe game. I spent HOURS on it… over the course of weeks to get it together so we could play. Came up with cards for status and how many actions taken. We played it and had a blast.

Well, I have only read 40 pages of this book and am probably going to toss all that work into the garbage and convert the campaign over. lol

I ordered mine yesterday so I can't play it yet but I am all for positive focus for this game. i'm a Star Wars and jumped on this. No way was I going to miss this opportunity.

I'm in, definitely!!! Although I m not a gamer (sorry guys, but there's just too little interest in this part of the galaxy where I'm at), I have collected all the WEG and WotC-books, just for their vast amount of (new) details and adventures!!! I love reading through them (I admit, ommiting the game-ruling-stuff). I hope these new books WILL feature some new background info (just a bit like WEG, but not like the last books by WotC which had nothing new).

I am extremely looking forward to this firs (rules-heavy) book, and am hoping for a myriad of adventure and source-books to follow. BTW, I really really like the cover-design of the first book (but it could be that my brain is a littlebit excited by this sudden announcement of a new Star Wars RPG!!!!!!).

I'm very excited about this rpg, and I have nothing negative to say about it. My copy is on it's way now, but from what I've gathered of information from these forums and elsewhere on the internet, this looks like it will capture the feeling of the old WEG system.

I didn't like d20 og Saga very much. The rules were just not suitable to capture the action and excitement in the setting, and too restrictive, especially around the Force (no, it was impossible to move more than one item at a time with Move Object, and those long jumps you see all the time in the movies would kill the character).

I also love the idea of the talent trees. It reminds me of the good old days of the mmo Star Wars Galaxies, before it was ruined by dumbing it down. Freedom character development and lots of options is great, even if some choices (for example, outside the Career) are more difficult than others.

And as for the haters around here: I'm not really interested in reading messages like "No man, I'm NOT paying for a beta." or "I hate this rpg! I'm not buying it!". That's fine. Don't buy it then, we don't care. No reason to try to sour the mood and excitement for the rest of us, is it?

What I'm most excited about? Apart from being a new Star Wars rpg? The character system, and a dice system that doesn't involve numbers. I often feel that rules systems in other rpgs boil down to some exercise in mathematics, where players sit around the table throwing numbers at each other. I really hope that this rpg breaks away from that, and takes the focus back on the actual roleplaying and mood of the game.

Glad to see there are others here who are as eager to show their support of the system as I am. :)

Thanks for the details, Brash. Does that mean that you can somehow birth a Light Side point by using a Dark Side one? How did combat seem? I've heard that it works incredibly well for Star Wars-esque combat, but I'd like to hear your opinion of it.

Just want to add that I'll be writing a big "first impressions" post here as soon as I've given the book a read through. I really want to get into the nuts and bolts of this game, and since it's a Beta, start to discuss it. Would be great to make the most out of the Beta period and help FFG make a great final product. :)

I wish I didn't have to spend this weekend preparing for an Exalted game next week. I'd much rather be reading up on EotE :P

I'm really looking forward to getting my copy of the beta, feeding back my thoughts and getting involved with this fledgling community.

I'm glad that FFG are putting out the beta to give the wider group of players a chance to give suggestions on how to improve play for our groups, most other companies either handle this via errata or bring out a new, improved edition after a couple of years. At least this way we might be able to catch most issues before the full release.

I also like having the opportunity to get my hands on a special limited edition, early release product so that I can delve right in to start telling some epic fringe stories.

The bits of the rules that I have seen so far seem encouraging, so fingers crossed my players are willing to give it a go.

I will be aiming to do the same, Eirik. :) … Hopefully any day now. :P

Why not just get your gaming group into EotE?

Well said. :) Then you can give us playtesting feedback!

Oh, I will. But it''s not nice to cancel a scheduled game session. Especially when we only play, like, bi-monthly over the summer. I fully intend to run a few EotE scenarios in parallel, once I get the book. :)

(The session next week will be perfect to showcase the book… assuming it arrives in time)
