Social Encounters

By Nephtys2, in WFRP Rules Questions

i guess this has already been asked, but still:

can anyone give me a rundown on how you do social encounters, as discribed in Lure of Power?

i read the rules like 5 times now and i just can get something out there for me. how is initiative rolled? with AG or FEL?

how does it play out? is it like everyone speaks one sentence and then the next character does? does anyone have a nice example maybe?

i tried it with my group, who wanted to try out the whole social experience with social actions and fitting characters. as we got to our first social encounter everyone was like "that's weird, why do we roll initiative for that? what should i do now, can i use an action, what about the recharge rating, what about the shame?" and i found myself being unable to answer most of those questions.

i do understand the concept of shame and i think i also got the idea of the duel of the wits, but still this totally confuses me when trying to run a social encounter that is structured like a battle…

any help? thx in advance

We play it as the character gets to say whatever he wants and the GM adjudicates whether or not it warrants bonus or penalty dice. Then roll. It's not really sentence by sentence. Usually, it's best if the players agree on one person to speak (not the Trollslayer).

Basically play it like this: "Convince me 5 times." "Say it 5 different ways." Roll 5 different times..or however you want to track it on the progress tracker.

Initiative matters this way: Lord of the Rings example: Gandalf walks into speak with Denethor in the white city..and BEFORE he get's to speak, Denathor lays into him about the death of his son. Gandalf clearly lost the initiative on that one…but then the hobbit speaks up and saves the day..but on a chaos star roll, suddenly finds himself in the service of the Steward of Gondor.

jh

that already helped, thx ;)
