Warhammer 2.5ed?

By Yepesnopes, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Hello everybody

I got by chance a play test copy of Only War, the new rpg based (one more, sigh!) in the W40K universe. Only with a first glance I realized that is a kind of warhammer 2.5ed. It uses the very same core mechanics but it includes some nice rules of corruption, insanities, critical wounds… it looks like an iterated version of the warhammer 2ed system.

Do you know if the rest of the W40K rpgs are the same? Because then I will be dropping wfrpg 3 and adapt my wfrpg 2 to the new rules of Only War (or other W40K).

Cheers

Yes, it's based directly on the old Warhammer 2nd Edition rules (which in turn were based on 1st Edition and the older 40k rpg rules, etc). Fantasy Flight just tweaked and polished'em for their own edition. From what I have read, the various FF 40k rpgs are compatible enough to be used together, it's just not recommended since the power balance in a party consisting of a Rogue Trader, Space Marine, military grunt, etc…would be WAY off.

If you are after a better version of the whole 2nd edition then I suggest you wait until Zweihander is published later in the year. If you want to see what it will be like, you can find it on the Strike to Stun forums.

Well, I hang around the strike to stun forums from time to time and I have given my opinion about a few aspects of Zweihander more than once. Fore sure I will get a copy of it.

The only "but" I have for Zweihander is that if its final version it is not at least 80% compatible with (or straight forward to convert to) WFRPG 2nd ed, it won't be an option for me since I need published scenarios and campaings to run a game. I can't afford the time to do mines anymore.
