Talisman: The City Expansion on display at Gen Con Indy

By talismanisland, in Talisman

I agree with the people who don't want to have their characters replaced by elite-characters.

But I like the idea of adding/unlocking extra special abilities from such titles. Could work as the werewolf, one small aditional card for each elite profession. First one to be good enough for the job, gets it =)

Don't know how it worked in 3rd edition since I only played the basic game of it, and only once.

It works something like that.

You can earn for example the High mage card, which is a title card that gives you a extra bonus and a ability.

It's a special card and not classified as a follower.

It's a nice idea indeed.

I think you have nailed some of them (Ninja and Spy), but I still think the one left of fountain is trickier. He has no shield, he's equipped with a net and a trident-like weapon (exactly as a "retiarius" gladiator) that is used to immobilize opponents; he's dressed with leather stripes and studded pads; might be a Slaver character, as we already have the Gladiator.

Maybe it's the Pit Fighter…

We will see..

We found they unbalanced the game because you added a whole new characters abilities to your own. So essentially your playing 2 characters in one. So if you became the master thief you would add to your character; 1 craft and life, steal any object or gold if you land on another player. The sheriff got +2 to st, the ability to teleport in the city. The high Mage gained +2 craft, always had 2 spells, never can become toad, can move spirits and spells cast on him either had no effect, normal effect or bounced back on other character.finally the kings champion had +1 to st and cr, immune to alignment change. They all had a few other abilities but were to powerful to be add ons. They should have been characters in their own. But toned down, especially the high Mage.

Yeah, I would prefer the new characters (like High Mage) to be characters on their own and ballanced with others. In fact, I disliked City 2E and 3E just because of imballance. And I will buy City 4E only if the new characters are ballanced.

Gaining extra abilities is no more unbalanced than gaining magic objects and followers that grant bonuses and abilities.

As long as you can lose your elite-title somehow (by breaking some rules for that title, or someone new gets the title) it would make no difference, and could be a fun bonus goal in the game. =)

I don't think we need to worry about 2nd lvl characters, if I remember correctly, FFG stated that they would not be using that mechanic at all. but you never know, after we get all four corners, what do they put out after that?

Let's not start all that again! :)

Maybe that FFG will make the timescape expansion after we get all the corners.

It's actually not on my list, but i think i would buy it just for the fun.

I'm not positive but I am sure I remember reading this at some point in the last couple years. Honestly though i could be wrong, it just seems very familiar. And since there are so many expansions out already and there is no lvl 2 characters, I don't think they will implement it, it would be too much work to balance. It was a neat mechanic in 2nd edition, but was very unbalanced. Currently in 4th the imbalance is pretty low i find. Although, I'm sure if they did implement it it would work well, LOL, as I find I am enjoying pretty much everything that FFG has done to Talisman!

I have a real hard time beliving we are gonna get a Barmaid as a playable character.

My guess for the gal with the tray of "drinks" is some kind of poisonmaker.

Good call on the net, Warlock!

I was going to say that the "shield" was a stone-part of the fountain, but now I also see the net. Can actually make out the characters hand through it.
So I stick with jailer. slaver och bounty hunter for that character.

I think that it is a Jailer or Slaver too now…

so how long til they advertise here, you think?

I think early in september.

Not really related particularly, but this caught my eye today.

A "Water Weird" from CenterStage Minis.

Looks somewhat familiar…

That´s a nice miniature Jon.

He looks a bit like the endboss in the oot series:)

I think that this water elemental will appear as a enemy in the city deck, just like the other talisman editions:)

I think it would be more interesting if a Wishing Well were part of the Cityscape. It involves spending gold by throwing it down the well, with either good or bad results…..maybe if you pay too little, or undertip the barmaid ;-), the well reacts negatively, whereas if you please the little gnome spirit in the well, you get a spell or whatever. Kinda like taking a chance with the Enchantress, but more dangerous/productive.

My guesses for the characters: Witch Hunter, Martial Artist, Spy, Barmaid (!), Illusionist, Gnome. OK, I made the last 3 up. :)

Ok, here's a wild guess. I think the "gnome" in the fountain might be some kind of engineer. It looks like he have some sort of googles on his head. If you play for instance World of warcraft, engineers often displays some sort of googles ;)

And before everyone screams thats to hightech, Talisman are already there with some enemys that are classified as constructs. Perhaps he will have some ability that is linked with "constructs" and the City-expansion will feature more enemy constructs than the expansions up to now.

I personally wouldn't mind some 'tech' without overt modern-ish resonance, but I 'm willing to concede that we should not have a new "Timescape". A semi-steampunk kind of character or stranger, enemy, etc could work. But don't make them a displace Time Traveler either. Even medieval cities must have had some sort of 'planners' or doers, men who could run things, figure things, invent things. But the character should be very unique, in the sense of 'just this one'.

So an Engineer?

I think it is a gnome engineer

Looks similar yes?

He could also be a inventor or tinkerer or something like that.

Indeed, he looks very similar.

I think we can´t go wrong with this one, but you never know..

A gnome is a cool character.

Interesting idea with this Wishing Well I also thought about it. Additionally one of the Warlock Quests Travel to the City states: "Bring the box to the city and seek the fountain in the Square of Kings. Place it in the fountain at midnight, turn, and leave that place immediately." So the Square of Kings would be one of the spaces in the City…
