Talisman: The City Expansion on display at Gen Con Indy

By talismanisland, in Talisman

I have look again at the guy left of the fountain and it´s not a Centaur.

Look! He has a big shield in it's right hand, and it's not a horse body.

It's the Soldier! :)

I think this are the characters:

Ninja (blue guy)

Spy ( with the hat)

Soldier ( left of fountain)

Halfling ( into the fountain)

Swordman ( right front cover)

Ranger ( left front cover)

I think you have nailed some of them (Ninja and Spy), but I still think the one left of fountain is trickier. He has no shield, he's equipped with a net and a trident-like weapon (exactly as a "retiarius" gladiator) that is used to immobilize opponents; he's dressed with leather stripes and studded pads; might be a Slaver character, as we already have the Gladiator.

The one into the fountain looks like a Gnome (mostly because of glasses and slender figure, it's the technician gnome archetype); the one in the left front cover is dressed like a Ranger, looks short like a halfling and is surrounded by flaming birds. Elementalist is my choice, but I'm not very confident.

The lady in the right corner could be anyone, but I bet she's the Halfling (a female one). She has a dagger and her head looks quite big, but the picture doesn't allow for a clear perception of proportions. I think they'll save the Ranger for the Forest Expansion.

However, they're about to release the most intriguing and controversial expansion for Talisman 4th edition. I'm very curious to learn about this one.

Good call on the net, Warlock!

I was going to say that the "shield" was a stone-part of the fountain, but now I also see the net. Can actually make out the characters hand through it.
So I stick with jailer. slaver och bounty hunter for that character.

If the blue elf is a ninja, its some crazy looking ninja. Like something from Mortal Combat.
I think I just understood the blue elfs weapon. I thought that the rope-thingie was part of it, but it might be her hair, but not looking blue, since the window shines on it. And then the dagger is simply in her left hand. Otherwise it's a weird looking scythe or a knife in the end of a rope or a tail.
So, she is a elf with blue clothes, long blue cloth on her head, partial facemask, dagger and her hair tied in two long braids.
Could be anything from a dark elf assassin to a warrior priestess or exotic curtisan.

You have a good point.

As you said, we have already a gladiator, so who is this guy then?

Maybe a new character who fights with a trident and a net..

Oh i have not think about glasses. I just thought that he has big eyes or something, but i could not see it very good.

A gnome would be funny. I think he has also pointy shoes.

I hope it's not a elementalist. They are more important characters than that.

Rangers has mostly a cap on his head and they are wearing a bow. I don't see that in the picture, however, they can call animal spirits to help them in battle.

This makes it difficult to tell what he really is. I think it's a new character.

Yes, this lady is difficult to tell what she really is. It could be a halfling.

But what are those potions doing there? Maybe it's her work:)

Still, she needs to keep a dagger with her.

I agree.

Actually, i am more interested how FFG has create the city.

Will it follow the same route as the other boards, or are they small streets between the shops, and what can you buy there:)

On top of that, could the white elemental on the cover be a endboss who plagues the city, or is it just a enemy from the city deck.

I think it's the second option, but you never know. It would be totally new in the talisman world. The city never got a endboss before.

So i think that would not happen..

PS: oops something went wrong. you can read my answer in the black space:)

back in second edition, I was never a big fan of the city, but after looking what FFG has done with Talisman, I would have to say that I am excited for EVERY expansion, LOL. I'm sure that the city will also be just as awesome as the rest!

The 'trident' in that guy's hand is actually a catchpole: catchpole2.jpg Used in the 17th century and earlier to catch fugitives … possibly slaves or witches too, though I'm not sure. The character could be a jailer, or a slaver, or a witch hunter, I guess. The woman in the foreground is carrying a bunch of pint glasses on a tray - barmaid?

Who can say that Talisman is not educational?!

So…this guy who use a catchpole has something to do with the law…

According to some sources, catchpoles were once used in the capture and control of criminals during medieval times. Law enforcement in the medieval period was harsh, and devices known as “neck traps” were indeed used to control prisoners, but the design of such devices was significantly different from the modern catchpole. The belief that the catchpole was a law enforcement tool is probably the result of the historic use as “catchpole” as a slang term for law enforcement officers, referencing the aspect of the job involving tracking down criminals to bring them to justice.

It could be a Jailer, i don´t know. But if that would be true, then he should have a different body i think.

Maybe he is part of the City Watch…

talisman

I may be able to shed some more light on this later in the week.

I was at Gen Con this year.

The catchpole made me think Saracen, who can enslave people.

I think the blue elf is the Dark Elf, not a ninja.

Could the tophat guy be Sherriff? He could be holding a rod of office.

Dark Elfs have a dark skin, and this one (the blue guy) have a blank skin

So i think that it can´t be a Dark Elf..

But it would be awesome if we got one.:)

Drowelfs have black skin, not darkelves. Either way, I don´t think it´s a darkelf. Probably some completely new character along with most of the ones displayed on the box.

I think that only the guy with the tophat and the elf summoning a phoenix might be old characters, others might have some of the older characters abilities but will come with a new name and new abilities as well.

Wow! I think we have processed these possible characters so much that

they're Cheese! Just kidding. I think most of you have better thoughts than I.

Like others, I have assumed that the New City may very likely have an end-boss, such as the Water Elemental, though I think it will be more tricky than that; Cities should be able to be entered and exited, more or less, freely. Of course we are talking Talisman here, so who knows. So I do believe that the board won't be designed in the manner of Dungeon or Highland - moves one way towards an 'end'. It will probably be similar to the old City, but more so. A poster mentioned 'side streets' where possible adventures or new/other shops can be found. YES~ I think the City board should in most respects equate to some sense of a real City. Now as far as end-boss or "Big Bad", perhaps it is presented as a challenge and opportunity, not without consequences, but not integral to "wnning" or leaving the City? A returning, spiteful Water Demon or Elemental, who can be vanquished or not, but with a good reward of some sort.

I also think that the future of Talisman expansions may manifest through the small expansions. Blood Moon has changed and created new dynamics in the play. What if future expansions further 'layer' or detail the game. My thought there would be (and I'm riffing off of another poster!) that small sets may feature different challenges that present as mysteries to be solved. Example: One of those cults that shows up (Dark acolytes, Dragon Druids, etc. etc.) and will attempt to raise that old High Mage who created the Crown. If its the Dragon cult, perhaps its because they want to force him to release various bindings he has placed on Inner region or other places. But other mysteries or 'plots' are out there: Vampire Tower ( possibly tying into Blood Moon), this Highest of Vamps is looking for a spell or object that will stop daybreak from ever happening again. Only some certain counterspell or similar can stop this from happening.

Witch Hunt: All magickal users are to be hunted down, imprisoned or dispatched. This creates yet another NPC, the Witch-Finder General, who has formidable powers (and politics?) on his side. He's blackmailing the King of the Land to outlaw Magic, by holding the Queen hostage, somewhere. Ultimate goal, rescue the Queen and return her to the Castle. The King will repeal the law, give rewards, banish the General, etc.

0000ps! I'm getting ahead an expansion or two! - best, Oberon

Now that we talk about characters…,

If we add the 6 characters from the new city expansion to our list, then we have a total of 64 characters, including the 12 special german ones!

That´s equal to the 2th edition set including the timescape expansion.

Hmmm… I wonder if the blue person is a Smurf…

Hmmm….that's not helpful Jon…you're not supposed to be having fun here, this is serious business. :P

Side note: what do you think a water elemental does in winter?

Maybe that the guy in blue is a arabian thief…or the Master thief himself!..

Flows South!

Ell.

I really hope there are no master or epic type characters like the Sheriff, master thief or high Mage from the 2nd edition. Those were horrible!

Becomes an Ice elemental ;)

Why? what was wrong with them?

I'm sticking with my barmaid interpretation :) She'd start at the Tavern, of course, and her abilities would have to do with gambling and/or healing. Maybe her gambling ability would be Fate-based. Why she's trying to balance an order of drinks while fighting the spirit of a well is beyond me, though…

Ok so whoever took the picture of the expansion obviously would have taken a picture of the BACK of the box!! So where is it?? Come on ! There is a wealth of information there that we are all craving….release the picture please???!! aplauso.gif

One huge detail about the box.

It was a mock up. It was the same picture front and back. I have a ton of pictures of it and connot see a seam where the box slips inside the top half. I think it is a box with two identical overlays. I'll go through my pics but I am sure the one posted here is as good or better than any shot I took.

Those characters replace your original character.

I don´t like that idea.

Luckily, they have fixed it in talisman third edition. If you find the master thief, sheriff, High mage, or kings champion, they will give you a bonus to your statistics.

High mage gives you 2 craft, and you have always 2 spells.

Kings champion. + 1 strength and craft .healed at the castle for free. not arrrested by city watch or country patrol.

Master thief, +1 craft and 1 life. You get 1 gold from the outlaw, bandit, or cutpurse instead of discarding one.

Sheriff: Not arrested by country patrol or city watch, but you may arrest another player in the same region.
