Future specializations?

By Plushy, in Only War

I'm a big fan of getting ahead of myself.

Right now, Only War has the following specializations: Weapon Specialist, Heavy Gunner, Medic, Operator, and Sergeant for Guardsman, and Commissar, Orgryn, Ratling, Sanctioned Psyker, Ministorum Priest, Mechanicus Enginseer, and Storm Trooper for Specialists. It's a fine list, all in all. Covers a lot of the lovely old Imperial Guard.

But looking to the future, what would you like to see added?

I'm a big fan of bringing back some of the Dark heresy careers as Specializations; the Adept and Arbitrator both have special places in my heart. Some kind of non-Ratling Sniper could be a lot of fun; perhaps build him for stealth and make it a Sniper or Assassin? Bringing in more abhumans might be nice, too, what with Squats being canon again and the interesting addition of Felinids. I'd love to see a game about pilots get added later, too.

I would like to see some kind of advances for existing specialities like for example Confessor for Priest, Bone 'ead for Ogryn, Primaris for Psyker or Lord for Commissar. Only part from 6th ed. rulebook that I like are the rules so big no to Squats and other abhuman idiocy [cat people!? really GW It is even more stupid than beastmen as abhuman again instead of chaos mutants].

Quite a few alternate ranks from DH would make nice careers. Crimson Guard could be a fun addition.

Squats are a fun part of the fluff ( and may or may not be hiding in The Lathe Worlds as a Scum starting rank) and cat people are fine in my book. They would almost certainly be grotesque and monstrous.

From Guardsman there should be a Pathfinder ( Scout/Sniper), Feral Warrior/Duelist, Bodyguard/Colour Sergeant and I think that Armored regiments need some love, so how about the Tank-Hunter (something along the ways of vehicle sniper rulewise) . And we need some scumish/rougish archeotype whose comrade advances specialise at illegal side of Guardsman free time.

For Specialists there is just so much. Homo Sapiens Variatus. Sister Hospitaller. Commissariat Provost. Afrieli Strain. Gland Warrior.Officio Sabatorum specialist. Navy Officer… Nightworlders on the other hand should be an origin,

But yeah catpeople are kinda too much. Oh, and there are no squats. They might have some connections to Lathesmaster but it is surely just a coincidence

Rough Riders would be nice, if only as an alternate to Operators. I'd love an Aeronautica Imperialis book that covers Naval involvement in ground wars- pilots and gunners, as well as the craft they pilot.

I've got a rough homebrew for pilots, if you'd like to see.

Give me back my IG Beastmen, in the good old days of Epic Space Marine they made great bullet catchers, would love to see them make a return to the general 'fluff' if not OW. I echo the call for a scum-like achetype since I imagine his 'out of hours' skills could come in very handy and provide plenty of plot hooks, being sent on another suicide mission? Yet again without that vital piece of kit that would make your squads lives so much easier? See if Lance Corporal McShady can fix that problem… or better yet acquire that rare Scintillan Brandy your CO likes so much and get some other poor bastards sent on that particular fools errand ;)

The Aeronautica stuff would be great, as would general 'Tread Head' stuff for Tankies so we could fight whole campaigns from the seat of our Valkyrie or Leman Russ

I'd like to see an Officer advanced specialty. Give it some fairly lofty prerequisites and it would be great!

On the other hand, a Sergeant could be role played as an Officer essentially. So not really expecting it.

Future Spec's I would expect are:
- Sapper/Demolitions specialist (yes the Operator could do this but would be killed with one shot)
- Recon/Scout
- Rough Rider (though would fit better as Regimental choice)

Death Korp - Engineer, Grenadier

Cadian - Colour Sgt

Catachan - Marbo equvilet Spec Ops type

First of all since people mention assassins, scouts and pathfinders, its already in the book. it's called weapon specialist. It has the aptitudes and starting skills to make a good enough variant of all those.

However, should there be assassins, they should be enhanced ones from the proper assassin ministorum. With proper choices of the different types of assassins available. Then again, they usually work alone and wouldn't fit well in a group, at least not for more than one or more missions.

I'd like to see more options for grenadiers or similar though, either just talents that allow you to throw stuff better, perhaps a re-roll or something, or some other solution.

The weapon specialist is many roles in one, from a basic grunt to a scout/pathfinder, a melee specialist or 'purifier' with flamer. While the heavy gunners variations mostly come from choosing your starting weapon and proficiency, like if you choose a launcher then youre the rocket launcher guy and so on, the weapon specialist is so much more. Try them out, they're good for more than you think :)

On another note, I'd like more variations of comrades for each class, allowing more specialisation that way. Perhaps simply that you could choose from two or three different types, some available for more characters than others, like a spotter could work for both a heavy gunner and a weapon specialist, not just a ratling. This would make variations of the already known classes.
