Hypothetical Scenario- Gold Rush

By jabberwoky, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

This is only a hypothetical situation. I haven't run the scene yet, and your input into how I can improve it is welcome, as always.

The Setup: A group of acolytes believes a rogue trader is going to be meeting with an infamous tech-witch to buy a Prognosticator; a heretical piece of artificial intelligence that can mimic what a Navigator can do by predicting warp currents. Their Inquisitor has charged them with to destroy this piece of machinery, and if possible silence the tech-witch.

Additionally, the Inquisitor has provided his acolytes with teleportation belts in case things go south. Some may believe that this is too generous, but since tech-witches love creating undead servitors, the belts have also been rigged so that when an acolyte dies, their body is teleported away, thus denying the tech-witches their helpless, fleshy victims.

The Scenario: The acolytes will arrive at the meeting place where the rogue trader and the tech witch are to meet. If the acolytes do a little scouting, they will find the rogue trader has arrived at the meeting spot early, bringing along with him a few body guards and a large crate of gold (payment). The tech-witch will arrive with the prognosticator and with a mean-looking servitor.

The situation seems simple enough. When the heretical item is in sight, the acolytes ambush the trader and the witch, killing as many as possible, and getting the hell out of there via teleportation.

However, a savvy acolyte may realize their chance for a good amount of gold, in addition to helping the Inquisition. If a teleportation belt was modified to go around the gold, all that gold could be teleported away, to be divvied up among the acolytes in a safe place. However, there are no spare belts, which means that one acolyte would have to stay behind, or someone's belt must be forcibly taken off.

The Question: If one of the acolytes is forced (or tricked) out of their belt and left behind at the meeting place by their treacherous "friends", do the surviving acolytes gain corruption points for their actions? I ask because taking the gold would be seen as recovering evidence, and acolytes by their very nature are disposable. But is this a sufficiently evil act to do upon another player that it would warrant gaining corruption points?

I dont think so. I see corruption as anything warp related. Thats not to say for some truly heinous acts of cold blooded murder they wont gain corruption points. But just being greedy? not in my opinion.

no they would not get any corruption as that is gained only from exposure to the warp (i.e. daemons)

what they should get in my opinion is a very pissed off enemy (the acolyte left behind) and why not have the crate of gold fake while your at it.

that should serve the greedy buggers right.

Sorry to hammer down on your ideas, but I do think that this makes a nice scenario

1) It is to short
It starts with the final battle (as I get it)

2) It depends on the PC to act in a certain way
If all of your PC focus on "the mission, like ordered" you scenario will not work out

Suggestion:
Plan a mission around locating this meeting point, with the ambush at the meeting point being the actual climax of a the mission. Have this "tons of gold!" thing as a possible twist

Do not use "Teleporter Belts". I think 40k is not having such items, or at least not outside the "unique" range of access. Go for teleport homing beacons instead and add a small ship (or hidden mobile station) with the teleporting device. It has nighly the same function, but adds the problem that the PC need t be able to contact (via vox) the teleport operator for an extraction

Agreed. Mostly.

To be clear regarding Teleportariums:

There is a faction among the Grey Knights who use such items, but they are backpacks, and are very bulky, i.e. it's very hard to go around incognito while wearing such a thing (this isn't Star Trek). A Malleus Inquisitor (and only the Ordos Malleus), who happens to be Oath Bonded to the Grey Knights may have access to one but it would be exceedingly rare to have it at the beck and call of a group of Acolytes.

The Teleportarium is ummovable and is left on the ship. A Grey Knight ship would not normally be assigned to an Inquisitor. So the situation you describe is among the most of unlikely circumstances. Why would a group of high ranked characters need a pile of gold?

With that said, remember that gold may not be the standard for some worlds. On a world such as Iocanthos, where food is difficult to come by, 'High-grade CS protein packs' may be worth more.
