How competitve is the game?

How competitive is the game usually? I'm thinking about bringing some of my cards to gencon to play but I only just started playing the game last week and I don't want to go there and not have any fun because players are out for the kill. I used to play Magic, and when I came to a FNM game last week, I just had a couple of the "starter" decks for 2013 and players were not interested in playing with someone casual/newer. Should I just hold out and bring my cards next year after I've played more?

Thanks!

Just put it out that you only want a casual game. Even competitve plauers bring trashy fun t2 decks to lay.

This is my first GenCon, but from what I hear there are always casual players who come to the GenCon tournaments. There are competitive players. If you get matched with one and tell him/her that you're new and playing with a limited card pool then most likely he'll still play a quality game but be nice about it and walk you through what he's doing so you can learn. Since there's two separate days if you want to pick one, melee is generally a more casual format and tends to have more players (meaning more casual players since the competitive players are either in both or just joust). Of course, if you prefer joust play that tournament. You're always welcome to play both too.

Ah i just assumed he was asking about pickup games.

The warmup tournament is normal very easy going. Even with a limited card pool you could have a good time and learn a few things. Just let the other person know that your new to the game.

Agree with darknoj…the warm up tourney is where people play their fun decks. I think its also a bit shorter, and people are more relaxed. If this is your first event, I recommend that. If you decide after that you want to go "all in," you can still sign up for the joust the next day.

When I got to GenCon last year I was signed up for Melee and Joust. But I decided to get refunds for my tickets because I'd only been playing a few months, didn't have all the cards, and figured I'd just get slaughtered. After playing in a couple of Regionals this year, I regret that decision. This is a really great community and I missed out on the chance to meet a lot of people and have fun. I wish I'd gotten on the forums and asked the question you just asked so someone could tell me not to worry about, just come and have a good time.

So consider yourself told that. happy.gif

I killed a man over a game once. I just waited for him outside the card store until he was finished with his games and then ambushed him, like a Dragon Knight. Even had an Arakh and everything. Good times, good times.

Also, I'll have like 20 fun decks with me, or will have all my cards to build them anyway. I'm getting there at about 11:30 AM or so tomorrow, and would gladly play a few pick-up games!

yes pick up game ;)
