Death by Payne

By Mitch1974, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Death by Payne says " response : after a character triggers Its characters abilitys, kneel Ser Ilyn Payne or a noble character to kill that character"

The " Its" refers to its printed characters abilities or i play it when a characters abilitys gained is used

example: when a unique character discard a duplicate to save can i re killing whit "Death by Payne"

The "save" response given a card by a dupe is considered an ability of the card itself. That way, a character immune to character abilities can still be saved by its own dupe (because a card cannot be immune to its own abilities). So Death by Payne may be used against a character just saved by a dupe.

I ask that, because in another topic http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_foros_discusion.asp?efid=18&efcid=4&efidt=694584

  • Ktom says :

Burning Bridges only prevents the use of abilities, etc. that are on the card. Traditionally, that has been interpreted as triggered effects that are printed on the card. Since the dupe effect is not actual text, it would still be permissible - as would any "gained" text.

I half remember getting a ruling from Nate on this recently, but I don't remember if it followed or switched that traditional view. Anyone else remember?

  • And Bomb answer :

Multiple people confirmed that Nate had ruled that the character ability needed to be printed on the card. Therefore, gained character abilities would be unaffected by Burning Bridges.

Maester Murenmure is the perfect example of a character who gains an ability and would be unaffected.

and for Death of Payne " Its character abilitys " refers for printed abilitys or gained abilitys too

i not a good in english but if the text was " response : after a character abilitys is triggered, kneel Ser Ilyn Payne or a noble character to kill that character"

it work for printed and gained abilitys

You are correct.

Burning Bridges is worded differently from Death By Payne. Burning Bridges does not let you trigger effects on a particular card. Death by Payne responds to a character using its abilities. In the circumstance of gained abilities, you are talking about a character using its ability, which is not on the card. So gained abilities are not stopped by Burning Bridges (not "on"), but can trigger Death By Payne (since they are the ability of the character).
