Split loyalties

By Mitch1974, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

if my opponent have a Sansa Stark in is dead pile and the only unique character in is discard pile is Sansa Stark too.

Can i play Split loyalties to put into play a unique character from my discard pile without put into play a unique character from my opponenet discard pile, or because Sansa Stark cannot be put into play, this prevent me from playing that event?

sorry for my english, i hope you understand my question.

I believe that you would not be able to play Split Loyalties, as you would be unable to find proper targets. Since this is a "put a unique into play" effect, you couldn't choose a character in your opponent's discard pile that could not be put into play by the game rules.

I could be wrong, but I believe in this situation the event would not be playable.

  1. The rules for unique cards say a player cannot play, put into play or take control of a card if there is another copy of that card in their dead pile.
  2. The rules for the word "cannot" say that if you cannot do something to a card, you cannot choose it as a target for an effect that would do that something to it.
  3. The rules for triggering effects (this includes playing an event) say you need to be able to choose all targets to be able to trigger it.

So, in the case of Split Loyalties ("Kneel 2 influence to choose 2 unique characters in different discard piles, and put them into play, under their owner's control."), 1) and 2) say you cannot choose your opponent's Sansa for the effect and 3) says you cannot play Split Loyalties unless you choose 2 unique characters, so if Sansa is the only unique character in your opponent's discard pile, you cannot play Split Loyalties at all.

This is a longer way of saying the same thing as radiskull, but with the reasoning behind gui%C3%B1o.gif

I appreciate it. :) I was pretty sleepy when I wrote my post.
