If you have a scenario where the defender uses scouting vessel on an attacking character for the duration of the challenge and reduces his STR to 0, does this mean that Threat from the North then gets activated and the character is discarded ?

Sadly this does not work. If you reread scouting vessel, you'll see it doesn't say their STR is reduced. It says it doesn't count. This is not the same thing.

This is not possible becaus you can use the scouting vessel only on a defending character and not on an attacking
" Challenges : Kneel Scouting Vessel to choose a defending character . For the duration of the challenge, that character does not count its STR. "
