Large Monster and water

By 3green, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

As large monsters can use adjoining free spaces to get over pits, can they pass water if there is a suitable

free space adjacent to the water? Given that water and pits dont project up from the ground like rubble does.

Thankyous

To the best of my knowledge, they can't because if they do the bloodsquids will suck them into the depths.

Very well could be wrong though.

I'm pretty sure Big Remy's right on this one. There are specific rules for pits, mud, lava, and ice saying that large figures aren't affected unless every space they occupy contains the obstacle; there is no such rule for rubble or water.

In terms of game mechanics, water is really just rubble that doesn't block LoS.

Here we go again. This question crops up about once a week on this forum.

Officially, Water is an obstacle that cannot be crossed. Like Antistone said, think of it as rubble that doesnt block LOS.

And to be honest, water is a bit silly IMO in that it cannot be jumped across and large monsters cannot squueze past it. In fact, in some RtL outdoor encounters, large monsters become trapped.

We are currently discussing changing the rules for water in our group and it just seems stupid.

Having some obstacle that blocks movement but not LoS is a reasonable idea. Water is perhaps not the perfect choice for the artwork in a game where you're allowed to jump over obstacles, but frankly the jumping rules are probably sillier and more arbitrary than the water.

Do you really want to incur the wrath of the Bloodsquids?

I'd watch myself next time I wash some dishes if I were you.

I want a bloodsquid avatar, and thats FINAL!

HAHAHA I think that's awesome.

Actually I would love to see a 3 Point Trap Treachery card called "Bloodsquid Attack". The trigger would be when a Hero moves into an empty space adjacent to a water space. The Bloodsquids attack, and if the Hero rolls a blank he is instantly pulled into the water and killed.

Heh, maybe if we had an advanced search function (one that could use keywords, filter by subforum...), people would not ask the same questions every week :)

It usually is not a problem in dungeons, but in outdoor uncounters, it can make big monsters helpless, which is a shame given the fact that they usually are already subpar in the cost efficiency department.

There are several encounters when we had to surrender the big monsters because the heroes would be able to kite them until the end of time, without taking any damage in the process. Thus we have come to houserule it and allow large monsters to ignore water as long as one of their square does not start and does not end its movement in water.
