Discarding a duplicate is a character ability?

(4.2) Duplicates
If one of your unique cards is about to leave play, as a triggered ‘Response:’ effect, you may discard an attached duplicate to save the unique card from leaving play… Using a duplicate to save a character is considered to be a gained triggered "Response:" action. Thus, it is treated as a triggered effect and may be canceled, but because it is gained (and therefore an ability of the card attempting to use the response ), a character who is "immune to triggered effects" can be saved by using a duplicate, as a card cannot be immune to its own abilities.

I'm wondering if this is a character ability or simply a triggered effect that the player gains when his duped card would leave play, as the wording seems a little odd (though it sounds to me like it is a gained character ability) The reason I looked into this is that the plot Burning Bridges , which I have in one of my decks, would prevent players from using duplicates to save their characters if the former were true.

So if something says it cancels a "character ability," it can cancel a dupe.

Burning Bridges only prevents the use of abilities, etc. that are on the card. Traditionally, that has been interpreted as triggered effects that are printed on the card. Since the dupe effect is not actual text, it would still be permissible - as would any "gained" text.

I half remember getting a ruling from Nate on this recently, but I don't remember if it followed or switched that traditional view. Anyone else remember?

Multiple people confirmed that Nate had ruled that the character ability needed to be printed on the card. Therefore, gained character abilities would be unaffected by Burning Bridges.

Maester Murenmure is the perfect example of a character who gains an ability and would be unaffected.

Okay, thanks for the clarification on both points. It's still important to know how easy it is to cancel a duplicate save.

Keep in mind that there are ways to give a character "cannot be saved" text as well. Cards like Sun Stroke, Scurvy, Assault on King's Landing, Bitter Crone, Ser Gregor Clegane, and Brienne of Tarth have card effects that can keep a character from being saved.

Of course, that's straight forward enough, but the fact that you can actually cancel a dupe save is probably less known and is definitely much less apparent.
