Lily Chen and Azathoth and her Personal Story.

By Stormson99, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Lily passes her story when the AO awakens, as long as she hasnt went unconscious/insane in the process.

It says to remove one token from Azathoth's doom track, but what if he woke due to there being too many gates? The amount of doom tokens he has does not affect the number of gates. Im assuming the investigators still actually lose.

Yes, they still lose. The idea is that if he awakens by his doom track filling, you get to delay his awakening.

But a gate limit is a gate limit.

Wait a second, I always thought that Lily's personal story means that the AO gets one less doom token for the final battle, and not that she sends the AO back to sleep like a snooze button (which would make it completely useless against Azathoth). Am I wrong here?

I also thought that was the reason you added her personal story to the final battle modifiers section in the statistics submission form, Tibs.

There is no final battle possible against Azathoth: if you look at his sheet, you'll notice that as soon as he wakes up, the world is destroyed and all investigators lose the game.

Only slightly. Lily's successfully-passed Personal Story has a specific Azathoth clause that indeed operates as a "snooze button": remove one doom token, and Az stays aslumberin'. But if there are too many gates open, Az doesn't need his alarm clock to wake up, and Lily's Story is rendered moot.

Well, that'll teach me not to re-read personal stories after seeing them for the first time. I completely missed that Azathoth clause…

(completing the post after noticing it's clear only to me) that's why they introduced the Azzy clause in the pass condition of Lily's PS

Seems a bit unfair to add a special Azathoth clause to Lily but no Rhan-Tegoth clause to Rita Young.

Yeah, Rita's is kind of annoying, but it's not quite the slap in the face that is Norman's story being specifically called out as useless against Azathoth.

Eh, I live with it. Sometimes an investigator simply can't complete her story. That's partly why I disallowed certain investigators in my Introduction Scenarios (and why Norman is one of only two who aren't allowed during the Azathoth chapter).

Oh I have no issues with some personal stories being useless against some AOs, I think the fact that not every investigator is equally good makes the game more interesting (this goes for spells and other items too). What bothers me is actually that they put the Azathoth clause there.
But perhaps I should consider this as just another difference between investigators that adds some extra diversity to the game.
I'm not really sure what I think anymore.

Well, since you lose when Azathoth awakens, they had to make sure to say that he doesn't awaken.

As for Norman… his pass condition asks you to roll dice to remove doom tokens. This would be too much to cram in there with an Azathoth clause, so it was easier just not giving one.
