Help with Lannister Vs Martell Maesters in Joust matches

By SerArthurDayne, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

In my meta almost all of the different houses are represented, we do not play a lot of melee games mostly just joust. In joust I would say the biggest winning house/deck would be my "Power Behind The Throne" deck. I run the usual LoTR Cersei, a little kneel mixed in with lots of draw and income. I know this may come as a shock to a lot of players as Lannister are rated the worst house, however anyone in my meta will confirm Lannister wins the most in joust within our group.

Things have recently changed however as more players are adopting either a burn deck or maesters. I can usually beat the burn decks due to Lannisters excellent draw and income however Martell Maesters seems pretty crazy and I am currently losing a little under half the games. I basically need to get a really good draw and my opponent to have a bad draw to win in this match up right now.

The main problems I would say is the icon removal on my key characters and the fact that Martell has very strong intrigue characters so my agenda ends up hurting me quite a bit. Anyways, I was planning to bring the Iron Throne up to x3, so I can cancel the orphans or some of the other annoying abilities. Perhaps adding Dissension to take out the orphans before they can trigger during challenges ? I know Game of Cyvasse can be a problem as well when they remove icons then are able to kneel a higher strength intrigue to return Cersei or Mel full of power back to my hand.

Below is my deck, if anyone can make some suggestions on how to better combat Martell Maesters It would be appreciated.

Slot misinformation and use your shadows and spiders first or second turn. Worst case, they cancel it if you draw into it, best case you delay the game 2 turns because you drew into 2 copies and they used Art of Seduction on your Shadows and Spiders turn.

Misinformation will also easily bleed power off of the Conclave when used with Lannisport Tourney Grounds.

I really like the threat of 3x Castellan 3x Enemy Informer + First turn Retaliation also. Maybe look into that?

I would take out Mel because as you said, she's kind of a liability against Game of Cyvasse. The cost is just too much.

Being PBTT, you also want to explode out of the gate on the first turn. Try to beat them to the punch.

Run your 3x Cersei, also run a copy of The Mad Huntsman, he will get you your 2 intrigues when it really matters…

If you want to extend his life for a turn, add some infamy characters:

-House Clegane Outlaw works well because he is cheap, and he's a pretty awesome target for I'm You Writ Small.

-Yezzan's Grotesquerie is also an amazing character with Infamy.

Hope this helps out some.

Consider finding a place for Devious Intentions. Giving the intrigue icon protects the icon you need most, and the Stealth will help you get more intrigue challenges through against Martell.

Also consider finding a place for Nightmares. There is a lot of flexibility in that card against a deck that relies on character abilities. It can also be used to get rid of chain attachments on the Martell Maesters by removing the Maester trait (assuming no "Apprentice Collar", of course).

Speaking on behalf of the rest of his meta we are entirely satisfied with the Lannister deck being beatable on a regular basis. Please no more help. gran_risa.gif

If you are going to post any help, it should be how to beat Lanny kneel from any other house.

Ever since Search and Detain got restricted I have been trying to re-work my plots, not sure why I did not have retaliation in there in the first place. I swapped out "Let the porridge fly" for retaliation. I also removed "Muster the Realm" and have placed "Loyalty Money Can Buy" instead. I like the change with "Retaliation", however feeling iffy about the loyalty plot within the deck. There has to be a better fit ..Id like a 4gold+, originally considered "Breaking and Entering", "Hear me Roar" and "Twist of Fate" in its place. However the Loyalty plot might fit best …unless someone has a better recommendation ?

I really like your idea of using misinformation, that could be extremely useful …going to consider subbing that in. Also, as mentioned above I put in retaliation for when i have informer and castellan in my hand. Mel isnt so bad against game of Cyvasse, really she is in there for the extra unopposed power with the two intrigue and power challenges I am usually getting through between Cersei and the deadly characters. I find with the "Alliance" plot she fits pretty well with PBTT.

The Huntsman is a great card and ive tried to make him work, but once I get one power he becomes not that useful ..also the fact that I can use a sunset sea on him to reduce or use insidious ways on him can hurt. I think it comes down to basically I can put in the Infamy guys but is that really better to take out kneelers and the deadly characters for infamy based on the off chance I get huntsman out? I feel like initiating a challenge even with 1 or 2 str deadly can put my opponent in a tough situation since he will normally have to kill one for deadly or let it go unopposed hopefully netting me extra power with Mel.

Anyways thank you for taking the time to provide some really good feedback and ideas.

You can use Sunset Sea to reduce the cost of The Mad Huntsman? I hope I read that wrong. If your problem is just against Maester decks then Shadows and Spiders won't exactly help too much because almost ever Maester has intrigue and power. But you would be in very good shape if you put in Misinformation like someone else mentioned. You could also think about putting in Breaking and Entering to your plot deck to thin out your opponents hand faster and then deny them with Misinformation come their turn.

I much prefer Jaime Lannister from Tourney for the Hand compared to the Lions of the Rock version. Kneeling a Maester at the right time can ruin plans your opponent might have had with his links. If you have free copies of A Lannister always pays his Debts, I would throw that in because that's just me.
