GM Screen

By Yepesnopes, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Hello

Sorry for the stupid post but, I have no access to my GM screen, and I want to create a better GM screen (which is not going to be a difficult job). I will start from the rules summaries of HedgeWizard (I think is him who did it). In order to print the sheets in its proper size and attach them to the already existing panels, can anyone tell me which is the size of each individual panel of the GM screen? is it A4?

Thank you a lot,

Here's a good place to start:

Court Dimon's panels (I"m going to laminate a copy for myself): www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_foros_discusion.asp

I'll go measure my screen and be back in a minute.

edit: 8.5x11 is the size.

I'm of the opinion that the GMs screen is not well thought out and it is in vertical/portrait format, which means that it is way too high. Here's how I'd do it:

Put court dimon's stuff up and use the picture from the front of the Core set or Players guide (or any of the guides) on the cover (print a clean copy). Make it SHORTER however. I'd do it in Landscape/horizontal formatting. Chop teh tops and bottoms off these pictures and use that for your front (unless you want to have a "useful" panel that shows stuff for the players like first aid checks, full night's rest, house rules, etc.

Ieeeps!

Thank you Emirikol for the measurements! Indeed, these are the summary of the rules I was talking about. I will just adapt them to include my own house rules and remove those that are there that I won't use. They are a reaaaaaally helpful work!

I think I will just print and past them vertically in my GM screen, I am too lazy to do otherwise, but the picture suggestions are nice ;)

Cheers

So I just taped the "GM Screen Replacement 1" from Gitzman's gallery into the screen from the Gm's toolkit and I had to trim the edges some to get it to fit properly. So each panel is actually a little smaller than 85. x 11. Hope you find that helpful.

Also, I agree with Emirikol. Landscape screens are typically much better for play.

Yes, it comes out to be 10.85" for the vertical. The horizontal is maybe .1" less than 8 inches on my measurement.

Better to just make a new cardstock screen imho. I"m tempted to make mine smaller.

I'd love to see some examples that you guys worked up for inspiration.

I've so far gone with printing them on cardstock and laminating, and I just have those on the table behind the traditional screen. I typically stand during the session, so it's easier to look down than at something printed on the inside of the screen.

One of these days, I'll learn how to create the pdfs with a better layout, better spacing, etc using adobe tools.

Another vote for landscape orientation. If only because I want some more room behind my screen to put all the components I prepared :)

Question: When you're laminating sheets, how do you stick them together afterwards? Just tape makes it rather fiddly. And I've got clear edges around the sheets. Taping them together with clear tape means you can see through, taping with non-clear tape looks tacky.

Here is a link to my own personal GMs screen that I put together. I just cut out and used Sticky Tac to attach the various tables and charts to the back of Fantasy Flights screen, which as many have said before me, not put together very well.

Some details regarding some of the tables (left to right, top to bottom):

Skills list - just a basic list of skills, and a blank column that allows me to only reference the specializations that my players use.

Conditions list - easier than flipping through the deck to choose a proper condition (though I still use the cards), and makes improvising positive/negative conditions on the fly much easier.

Weapon/Armor stats summaries - simple list of the most used weapons and armor in my campaign. I keep a more detailed list in my GM's notebook. This list is great for improvising gear that NPCs and enemies might be carrying. Great for random encounters.

Environmental Damage - a home-brewed way of adjudicating unavoidable damage from rock slides, fire, drowning etc. For example: a PC fails their (Hard) 3D swimming check and gets swept down river into the rapids. Using this chart I can figure out what to roll to determine what kind of damage they take.

Various Commonly Used Skill Checks - some are pretty obvious, others are home-brewed ideas culled from these forums. The pre-determined results (which are still vague enough to allow for improvisation) are a big plus here. Keeps me from having to make results up whole cloth, and adds a bit of consistency to how I rule on particular skill check results.

Suggestions for use of Boons, Banes, and Chaos Stars - easy enough

Reminders regarding various Thresholds, how PCs can die (wounds, insanity, etc), and the strategic effects of cover.

Aaannd, my home-brewed chart detailing various Challenge Levels and the most common situations in which they are used.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Great ideas on that one. How do you print that off?

I've actually got most of the GM's screen broken up into separate 8 & 1/2 x 11 pdfs AND word docs (for future editing and updates), but you could just as easily copy and paste each table into a doc that fits a more printer friendly size -OR- alternatively, if you use a laptop/tablet computer at the table, you could just reference the pdf.

Otherwise, here are the various tables broken up into separate docs:

Very helpful and inspirational (is this an english word?)!

Thank you a lot!

Yepes,

Thanks GK. Good work on those. I can already see areas that we can expand. I think check your rules though on unconsciousness from stress and fatigue. Isn't it 2xtoughness or willpower +1 instead of just 2x?

According to the rules, it is.

Drat. I could have killed off two more characters last night in the mud outside Marienburg!

Yes it is. Since it's a "Threshold", it's assumed that once it's exceeded, the PC passes out. Much like the Wound Threshold.
