Smaller Style Expansions in Future?

By Neffer, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Just wondering what any one else had thought about future expansions. I've not played D1e but noticed how it was only ever big box expansions (correct me if im wrong). What I think would be nice for D2e would be a similar style to mansions of madness with small expansions with a quest book and some extras cards for around £12 a pop followed later by larger box expansions.

Any one else recon FF will go down this route?

Or even the expansion format used by Talisman, which also has large and small boxes.

I think it would be wonderful, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Yeah! Something like an Act III for the Shadow Rune campaign, a brand new campaign book with new quests, and/or new level 3 or beyond OL cards and hero skills :) The possibilities are endless!

I don't think we will see Mansions of Madness style POD expansions for Descent given that individual quests are less prominent. I am hoping we will see Quest Guides containing new campaigns without new components or minimal new components, as well as big box expansions.. It would cheaper and new campaigns would add a lot more playability to the game in a way than new monsters, treasures etc don't.

I agree that a new campaign book alone would be great. However since the 6 lieutenants and 6 relics are so very much tied to the narrative of the Shadow Rune campaign, I can't see FFG not wanting to add new cards/tokens for lt/relics in a new campaign, and they will likely go the big box way to add new heroes and monsters minis and new equipment as well.

A PoD for new classes of heroes would work fine however, you'd just need a dozen new small hero cards per class.

I think the first few expansions should have everything: a few new monsters, 1-2 new archetypes, 4-6 new heroes (1 per class), and an entirely new campaign with associated artifacts.

After a few of those, campaign only books would be fine.

I also think it would be neat if some fans wrote up their own campaign!

I think you meant 1-2 new classes rather than archetypes btw. New archetypes would kind of need for existing heroes (56 of them!) to be shoehorned into being able to choose one of their classes, otherwise only new heroes would be able to pick from them. Besides with Warrior/Wizard/Rogue/Healer, I think the bases are pretty much covered and I doubt they could come up with satisfying new archetypes.

I also think they'd try to include 4 new classes in a big expansion, one for each archetype.

Yup, I did. Sorry about that. :)

I was just thinking about that myself. The new design of the game give the chance to include; big box expansions that add monsters, relics, heroes/classes, lieutenants, and quests; small box expansions that include a few heroes/classes, overlord cards, search cards, item cards, travel cards, etc.; then also allow quest books with new lieutenants, relics, and quests. With the new streamlined mechanics, it has opened up more options than 1st had. Not that I dislike first, I'll still play it, but I like each edition for what it tries to do.

Since most people that buy expansions are going to want all of them, and FFG is obviously going to release new stuff of everything (campaigns, monsters, map tiles, cards, etc.), why not just release them as normal sized expansions instead of multiple small expansions?
