Dragon Egg and Zero Influence

By doulos2k, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

No, the card isn't out yet, but the ideas are already swarming on multiple boards but a question has already come up.

"When an event or triggered ability requires you to kneel a certain amount of in?uence, you must kneel characters or locations that provide at least that much total in?uence."

If you place Dragon Egg on a character, can you then play a zero cost character without actually kneeling any characters or locations?

Second, what you really asked: When the cost is 0 influence, you don't actually have to kneel anything to pay the 0 influence. Kneeling the influence-providing card is not something separate from paying the influence cost. It's all one-and-the-same. So "kneel 0 influence" does not carry a hidden meaning or imply a two-part cost of both a knelt card and the lack of "future access" to 0 influence. It's the "0 influence" text that defines whether or not the cost has been paid, not the "kneel" text.

So yes, putting Dragon Egg on an opponent's location lets you drop three Temple of the Graces in the Challenge phase (see why the distinction between "play" and "put into play" is important there?). Or, you can put it on an opponent's character, then go to town dropping in Parasites, Harbingers, Refugees, and Mercenaries. Illyrio will be very happy about that.

Yep - I see the distinction. The clarification is important because you could, theoretically, then put multiple Limited cards into play using this effect since you're no longer playing them.

This could get crazy.

True Queen's Harbinger:

Any Phase: Kneel True-Queen's Harbinger to lower the cost of the next Dothraki or Dragon you play or put into play using Ambush this phase by 1.

I will respond to you with this question:

If you kneel 2 True Queen's Harbingers, do you think you then still need to kneel influence to Ambush in Horseback Hunters(they have Ambush)? They have a printed gold cost 2 but would cost 0 to Ambush at that point.

Additionally, you cannot overpay for Influence costs by kneeling additional influence providing cards. Just like you cannot spend more gold than the cost of playing cards or triggering effects. Just like you cannot over pay on any other card effects cost("Kneel a character to do Y" does not allow you to kneel more than one character to pay the cost).

Therefore, if you knelt 1 influence to Ambush in a 0 cost card, you'd be overpaying the cost by kneeling that influence providing card because it would be the same as overpaying influence costs by unnecessarily kneeling additional influence providing cards when the influence is paid in full by kneeling only 1. You do not need to kneel any influence providing card to pay 0 influence because the influence is already paid in full.

That may be true, but the price is still to have Dragon Egg on an opponents character! I don't think it'll be as crazy as you may think considering you'll be able to play 1 of them during Marshaling anyway and then you'd have had to have drawn 2 or 3 of them in the same round to get to that point.

I can see it benefiting if you have Targaryen's other limited locations in your deck though. You are also not running KotHH with Temple of the Graces either! So I actually don't really see this being too terrible.

Cool - thanks Bomb. And, since Targ is my primary House… by "crazy," I mean Awesome! ;-)
