Flame Kissed v. Maester Aemon

By qkershner, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

I just want to make sure I'm playing this right:

Flame Kissed: If attached character has no other attachments, attached character gets -2 STR and is killed if its STR is 0.

Maester Aemon: Response: Kneel Maester Aemon to save a Night's Watch character from being killed.

In a very non-rules-written sort of way, I assume that if I put a Flame Kissed on Maester Aemon, he can exhaust to save himself, but Flame Kissed keeps 'checking' his STR, so even if he does, Flame Kissed will just keep trying to kill him?

So what happens if Maester Aemon has a Tin Link on him?

Tin Link: Response: After attached character kneels choose and discard 1 non-Chain attachment from play.

Can he respond to remove the Flame Kissed in order to save AND discard?

Thanks.

This has actually come up before.

Aemon cannot save himself from Flame Kissed because the save effect would not remove the terminal effect (killed if STR 0). It's actually not a case of "it keeps trying to kill him," it's that unless a save also removes the terminal effect, that save cannot be initiated .

Now, the addition of Tin Link, while I might seem to be an exception to this, is not.

Tin Link is not part of the save effect. It is a separate effect that just happens to be triggered by the save effect.

However, since a save effect cannot be initiated against a terminal effect kill unless it (the save) removes the terminal effect, the save still cannot be initiated.

Of course, the point remains that if Tin Link is also on Aemon, Flame-Kissed won't do anything when it is placed on Aemon as well since Flame-Kissed only works when it is the only attachment on the character.

Oh! Yeah, I had totally missed that. Thanks.

Doh. You got me. Stupid text boxes . . . .

On the other hand . . . what if Aemon (with a Tin Link) attempts to save Samwell Tarley? Or does this go back to the first comment, than you can't save him because of the 'terminal' thingy?

Correct. Unless the save effect either moves the character somewhere else (Like Citadel of Oldtown does to a Maester) or makes the character's strength be greater than 0, it cannot be used.
