Walder Frey

By Khudzlin, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Let's suppose I control Walder Frey, somehow give him an icon, attack with him and either keep him standing (or stand him before defenders are declared). Then the opponent I'm attacking defends with higher STR. What happens when Walder's passive resolves (I assume he kneels regardless):

  1. He stays an attacker and doesn't become a defender
  2. He becomes a defender and ceases to be an attacker
  3. He stays an attacker and becomes a defender
  4. The game breaks

I am not sure, but i probably choose 3. He will be count his strength as attacker and defender. At this point if the other defender has no deadly you as attacker will have more deadly and the defender will have to kill a defender unit, so he will choose Walder Frey and he will end in the dead pile.

Yep. It may seem off, but there is nothing preventing characters from being attackers and defenders in the same challenge. It's rare, and usually involves a bunch of peripheral effects, but it can happen. You "give Walder an icon, attack with him, then stand him" scenario is one such possibility.

Note that, if your opponent defends with less STR, Walder's ability will kick in and kneel him as an attacker. Of course, since he already is attacking, he doen't count his STR twice, but he will kneel again….

That is very interesting. Greatjon Umber is an example of where it is easily possible(Distinct Mastery, Frozen Outpost). Not that you'd want to do it though.

It's very strange to me that you can have a character participate on both sides of a challenge. Nothing in the rules forbids it though.

That's probably beacuse I cannot imagine a single situation where this would be desired by the player.

Thanks for the answers. I will send the question to FFG anyway, because the fact that there is no rule preventing a character from participating on both sides of a challenge might be an oversight on their part.

As for wanting a character to be on both sides of a challenge, maybe you want to win it, but not by too much, to escape effects like Areo Hotah's or Sun Stroke's.

I submit the following possible reasons:

If the character has Renown, being assured power on them regardless of outcome.

In the case of Walder Frey, the player has no choice in the matter: his attacking/defending as a passive ability.

A card where the character can trigger a response for being on the winning or losing side of a challenge (Areo Hotah, for example).

And did people already ask the question back then? Did some players make him participate on both sides of a challenge?

@KristoffStark: Renown works only if the controller wins the challenge… And it works even if the character participates on the losing side.

If you win a challenge (either as attacker or defender), each of your participating characters with the “Renown” keyword claims 1 power after the challenge resolves.
